Gently amusing:
“Yes, I’ll Marry You” by Pam Ayres
Yes, I’ll marry you, my dear,
And here’s the reason why;
So I can push you out of bed
When the baby starts to cry,
And if we hear a knocking
And it’s creepy and it’s late,
I hand you the torch you see,
And you investigate.Yes I’ll marry you, my dear,
You may not apprehend it,
But when the tumble-drier goes
It’s you that has to mend it,
You have to face the neighbour
Should our labrador attack him,
And if a drunkard fondles me
It’s you that has to whack him.Yes, I’ll marry you,
You’re virile and you’re lean,
My house is like a pigsty
You can help to keep it clean.
That sexy little dinner
Which you served by candlelight,
As I do chipolatas,
You can cook it every night! It’s you who has to work the drill
and put up curtain track,
And when I’ve got PMT it’s you who gets the flak,
I do see great advantages,
But none of them for you,
And so before you see the light,
I do, I do, I do!Soppy:
“On Your Wedding Day” by Anon.
Today is a day you will always remember
The greatest in anyone’s life
You’ll start off the day just two people in love
And end it as husband and wife. It’s a brand new beginning, the start of a journey
With moments to cherish and treasure
And although they’ll be times when you both disagree
These will surely be outweighed by pleasureYou’ll have heard many words of advice in the past
When the secrets of marriage were spoken
But you know that the answers lie hidden inside
Where the bond of true love lies unbrokenSo live happy forever as lovers and friends
It’s the dawn of a new life for you
As you stand there together with love in your eyes
From the moment you whisper “I do”And with luck all your hopes and your dreams can be real
May success find its way to your hearts
Tomorrow can bring you the greatest of joys
But today is the day it all starts.StirlingCrispinFull MemberA fried had this:
The Owl and The Pussycat.
By Edward LearThe Owl and the Pussy-cat went to sea
In a beautiful pea green boat,
They took some honey, and plenty of money,
Wrapped up in a five pound note.
The Owl looked up to the stars above,
And sang to a small guitar,
‘O lovely Pussy! O Pussy my love,
What a beautiful Pussy you are,
You are,
You are!
What a beautiful Pussy you are!’Pussy said to the Owl, ‘You elegant fowl!
How charmingly sweet you sing!
O let us be married! too long we have tarried:
But what shall we do for a ring?’
They sailed away, for a year and a day,
To the land where the Bong-tree grows
And there in a wood a Piggy-wig stood
With a ring at the end of his nose,
His nose,
His nose,
With a ring at the end of his nose.‘Dear pig, are you willing to sell for one shilling
Your ring?’ Said the Piggy, ‘I will.’
So they took it away, and were married next day
By the Turkey who lives on the hill.
They dined on mince, and slices of quince,
Which they ate with a runcible spoon;
And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand,
They danced by the light of the moon,
The moon,
The moon,
They danced by the light of the moon.GrahamSFull Member‘O lovely Pussy! O Pussy my love,
What a beautiful Pussy you are,😯
Munqe-chickFree MemberI was about to say Teh Owl and the Pussycat think it’s good for a non religious wedding.
Lardy_bikerFree MemberDont know if i will be able to say pussy without smirking…..
GrahamSFull MemberYeah I was at a wedding where “Owl and the Pussycat” was used at dinner and everyone at my table was giggling at the pussy bit. Depends if that is the effect you want or not.
PeterPoddyFree MemberHere you go –
We had this at out wedding just over 2 weeks ago. When it was suggested a month or two before, I read through it and thought it was just beautiful. Why Marriage?
Mari Nichols-Haining
Because to the depths of me, I long to love one person,
With all my heart, my soul, my mind, my body…Because I need a forever friend to trust with the intimacies of me,
Who won’t hold them against me,
Who loves me when I’m unlikable,
Who sees the small child in me, and
Who looks for the divine potential of me…Because I need to cuddle in the warmth of the night
With someone who thanks God for me,
With someone I feel blessed to hold…Because marriage means opportunity
To grow in love in friendship…Because marriage is a discipline
To be added to a list of achievements…Because marriages do not fail, people fail
When they enter into marriage
Expecting another to make them whole…Because, knowing this,
I promise myself to take full responsibility
For my spiritual, mental and physical wholeness
I create me,
I take half of the responsibility for my marriage
Together we create our marriage…Because with this understanding
The possibilities are limitless. We also had the classic – 1 Corinthians 13 – Which weather you are religious or not, is simply one of the most beautiful things ever written, IMO.

Hmm….
“When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways.” and all that jazz?
Always annoyed me that one. I don’t want to put an end to childish things thanks very much. Makes being married sound very dull IMO, the poetic equivalent of “Well, you’re f**ked now. Just grow old and die quietly please.”
Starts well though 🙂
mark_bFree MemberMy brother had this Irish Blessing at his wedding.
The reader was in tears by the end so i’d say it worked well at their wedding.
portercloughFree MemberI’ve heard this from Kahil Gibran’s “The Prophet” at more than one wedding:
mrsflashFree MemberWe had Corinthans as peterpoddy did and this;
The life that I have
Is all that I have
And the life that I have
Is yoursThe love that I have
Of the life that I have
Is yours and yours and yoursA sleep I shall have
A rest I shall have
Yet death will be but a pauseFor the peace of my years
In the long green grass
Will be yours and yours
And yoursjimmyFull MemberI liked The Art of Marriage, until I realised that every wedding ever uses it. But its still quite ‘nice’.
VanHalenFull Memberwe had abridged nick cave lyrics.
buggered if i can remember which song tho 🙄
Lardy_bikerFree MemberThe bods who are getting wed are more of the take that / beyonce school.
Dont know about nick cave…..
ransosFree Memberwe had abridged nick cave lyrics.
“Into My Arms” might not go down well in church – “I don’t believe in an interventionist God”!
ransosFree Memberps – we had this:
Friendship , by Judy Bielicki
“It is often said that it is love that makes the world go round. However, without doubt, it is friendship which keeps our spinning existence on an even keel. True friendship provides so many of the essentials for a happy life-it is the foundation on which to build an enduring relationship, it is the mortar which bonds us together in harmony, and it is the calm, warm protection we sometimes need when the world outside seems cold and chaotic. True friendship holds a mirror to our foibles and failings, without destroying our sense of worthiness. True friendship nurtures our hopes, supports us in our disappointments, and encourages us to grow to our best potential. (Bride) and (Groom) came together as friends. Today, they pledge to each other not only their love, but also the strength, warmth and, most importantly, the fun of true friendship.”
theotherjonvFull MemberFriends had Cure lyrics – I will always love you. Worked very well, especially as half (the older half) of the congregation hadn’t a clue of the source.
We had winnie-the-pooh as one (chosen by the wife) and I chose Flowers by Wendy Cope (google it – I’m just off home and don’t have time) Not ideal for everyone, but it says a lot about my gift buying prowess.
BeddsFree MemberWe had the Apache Wedding Blessing at ours..
Now you will feel no rain,
For each of you will be shelter to the other.
Now you will feel no cold,
For each of you will be warmth to the other.
Now there is no more loneliness,
For each of you will be companion to the other.
Now you are two bodies,
But there is one life before you.
Go now to your dwelling place,
To enter into the days of your togetherness.
And may your days be good and long upon the earth.Read by my dad..
🙂Munqe-chickFree MemberI had to read Corinthians out at a wedding in August in a Catholic Church. The groom was 37 years old and when I got to the bit
“When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways.” I looked at the groom and laughed hysterically …. he acts like he’s 15!!! then got embarassed as I was up high in the pulpit but everyone else laughed too so wasn’t so bad in the end!deadlydarcyFree MemberIf it’s a registry office, aren’t you supposed to avoid all mention of any kind of higher power as they are bastions of secularity? Or is that an urbane myth?
nickeggFree MemberIt’s no urban myth. No religious material or hymns are allowed at a civil ceremony ie Registry office etc.
I should know as i get married in 2 weeks.
mudpupFree MemberWe had this Apache Wedding Blessing at ours –
Now you will feel no rain, for each of you will be the shelter for the other.
Now you will feel no cold, for each of you will be the warmth for the other.
Now you are two persons but there is only one life ahead of you.
Go now to your dwelling place to enter into the days of your life together. And may your days be good and long upon the earth.Treat yourselves and each other with respect and remind yourselves often of what brought you together.
Give the highest priority to the tenderness, gentleness and kindness that your connection deserves.
When frustration, difficulty and fear assail your relationship – as they threaten all relationships at one time or another – remember to focus on what is right between you, not only the part which seems wrong.
In this way you can ride out the storms when clouds hide the face of the sun in your lives – remembering that even if you lose sight of it for a moment, the sun is still there.
And, if each of you takes responsibility for the quality of your life together, it will be marked by abundance and delight.
There are a few variations if you hunt around but we liked this one.
