I have a pair of the original Shimano winter boot things (MW80?) but have always found them a bit narrow and (maybe as a consequence) I also get cold toes after a couple of hours.
So, what spd winter boots with a wide toe box?
I'm quite happy to look like frankenstein's monster if I've got toasty tootsies.
Your not alone, ive taken out the insole to give a bit more room. And then worn thicker winter socks. But I am still getting patchy cold spots and pins and needles from time to time.
Not Spesh Defrosters - good waterproof shoes but not particularly warm though I do vaguely recall reading that they're going to be warmer for 2012
I've tried on the Spesh Defroster and the Shimano and they were both a bit narrow around the arch (Spesh were worse though). Unfortunatly they are they only ones I can find locally. Looks like i'm just going to have to take a shot at something mailorder and hopefully not spend too much on returning things.
For the last few years I've just used normally summer shoes with overshoes and Sealskinz socks.
Feet just as warm and clean shoes 
Strange that, mustard, as I have wide feet around the middle of my foot (eg the arch) which means that some shoes are extremely uncomfortable for me - but Spesh are one of the brands that are ok...
Lake used to (Still do?) a very, very good winter boot. eVent fabric, Boa closures and super toasty. Wide, too.

I've tried overshoes but there's too much faff and if you walk any distance they always seem to pull off the toe or tear on a flint.
I find Specialized shoes fit fine and noticed that this years defroster promise more insulation but wasn't sure how much more...
Weird, maybe I'll go back and give them another try. My other spds are Spesh too but they are absolutly ancient so I can't really judge anything on them.
I really wanted them to fit too as I'm a bit of a tart and think the new Defrosters look ace 
Lake MXZ302s at by far the warmest winter boot I've tried. I got them as that's what most SPD users choose for the Iditarod.

Old shimmy 101's were not the best. My Diadora Arctics were very good - until the sole fell off. Current Gaerne G-Ara's have a furry lining, but not actually that warm - and the tongue isn't waterproof either.
I was thinking about the Lake's but £180 is a lot to splash on something without being pretty certain it'll do the job.
Having said that they're good for the Iditaord they'll probably just about cope with the Downs around Brighton 
Got my MXZ302s a couple of weeks ago. Can't rate them highly enough! Really warm, super comfy & not at all bulky (despite the looks - they're actually a few grams lighter than my normal SPD shoes!)
Definitely worth the money. Paid just over £150 from wiggle by using one of their many offers. They also come in "wide" sizes.
having just been for a 25 mile spin in the pouring freezing rain, anything to keep my toes warmer sounds pretty appealing!
I think Lake 302's are simply going to be the answer, not cheap, but then what quality kit is? I've had Northwave Celsius (non artic) a few year back and didn't find them very warm, my current MW80's fit me fine and are the warmest I've tried yet (NW's & MT90's)
Did you see the new "Louis Garneau 0 Ergo Grip Shoes", in the fresh good (supplier by Evans), not experience of them but an interesting new shoe in the winter boot market.
My 101s are about 4 sizes bigger than my regular size and with a pair of Rapha summer socks and a pair of Rapha winter socks they are still roomy enough to worry that you won't be able to twist out of the pedal, and warm as toast.
Just back from 3 days in Scotland and they were fine.
I bought a pair of the new Specialized defrosters but returned them unused after having second thoughts. Didn't trust their water-proofness with the opening down the laces and reading comments about their lack of warmth.
The same shop recommended Northwave Celcius even though they did not stock them, so I bought a pair elsewhere and so far so good! Was out in them yesterday with 1 pair of thin socks and seal skinz and feet were warm!
I think sizing is VERY important, you want them slightly too big to allow air to circulate and allow you to wear thicker socks. If your feet are cramped then the cold will soon set in.
have a look at rose bikes website they do there own brand of winter boot it looks quite nice, i ordered a stem from them it came in 3 days even got a free gift as it was my first order.
i have the spesh 2012 defrosters i have size 13 feet i dont have much choice in spd shoes they fit my feet ok but i still get cold feet,im thinking of gel toe warmers that you put inside your socks like a heat pack.or failing that a set of 3mm neoprene overshoes
Cyclesports UK have the MXZ302 for a reasonable price, I bought a pair last week when they had an additional 10% off making them £136. Should arrive tomorrow. Can't wait.
I changed to Mw80 from the original shimano winter boots and they are much much better. The mavics looked good but couldn't find a pair in my size. The Northwave arctics seemed very warm, but didn't fit. In terms of size, i normally take a 42 in everything, but i've gone up a size to 43 and they're spot on
Does anyone actually stock the Lakes 302's to try on? Have had no joy finding anywhere and so went for the Mavic drifts instead, having tried the Mavic Razor for a size comparison. I'm still waiting for them to come into stock on a CR discount buy thou gh so keen to hear of any Drift wearers experiences so far?

I went up one. If they're too loose I'll send them back and go for my normal size but the advice I had received was to go one up.

The Polaris Shredder boots look good. Previous Polaris shoes I've tried have been nice and wide which should be good to accomodate thicker socks.
I've got a pair of Shimano's that are 1 size bigger than normal but they're still really narrow.
I always go a size bigger with Shimano - just bought MW81 from Merlin for £112.
Can't fault the specialised defrosters, but I do have narrow feet though, just got new pair from Hargrove cycles for £75
Picked up a pair of north wave winter boots last year. Seem very warm.
Only issue I have with them is that when it s very wet, like this weekend. I find the spray from the ront wheel tending to find its way down the top of the boot. Had to pour out the water both saturday and sunday.
Slight hijack, but has anyone tried using latex ankle seals to stop water running down into the boot, or for when you overtop them in a deep puddle? None of the boots suggested so far seem to be particularly waterpoof round the top.

Pete & Ronnie have had theirs for over 3 years & still going strong. Think Mike is on his 3rd pair of other make ones so an extra £50 to get 3 times the wear is a bargain.

yes the lake ones - never had cold feet in them pricey but worth it - mine are 4 years old and are as new I have had 2 pairs of summer boots in that time.
They will last for years still.
