I’d always assumed that turbo trainers on knobbly-tyred bikes were a no-go

But this article has me wondering – is there a trainer out there that’s suitable for use with my 2.4″ tyred Soul? Would be a handy thing for the spare room when I’m stuck at home. Don’t really want to go swappinf tyres and that, as the faff would mean I’d never use the thing.

Kinetic’s Traxle thru-axle enables indoor biking. Hooray?

It’ll make a load of noise and trash your tyres esp if they are soft compound.

I have an old goosed wheel that I stick in my frame for turbo usage. It had a normal slick on but now have a proper tyre. (not noticed any difference between them)

Minoura do a rim drive turbo that can be used with mountain bikes.

That rim drive looks like it would be crap with disk specific rims.

Presumably don’t work with disc specific rims, though…

Best thing is to get a cheap second wheel, with a slick tyre.

True, didn’t think about that in the excitement of remembering the obscure turbo trainer.

    😕

Lemond Revolution trainer does not require a rear wheel at all. To be honest, any old cheap wheel and casette will do, you won’t be needing the rear disk brake, will you?

By all accounts it’s massively noisy, though. (Not tried it, only read the reviews…)

I’ve got one and it works absolutely fine on disc rims, helps if they are true mind you!
