  • Touring – new darkside bike or mtb with skinny tyres?

My dad is looking at doing some touring and quick short road rides. As such has been looking around at new toys. He currently has a <27lb on-one 456 and has stuck some slick tyres on but would something like an audax bike be better?
Can anyone recommend something? Limit of around £1000.
Expecting to be carrying the full range of tent and cooking gear – 20kg max of all luggage?
Wanting lighter weight for speed on local road rides but strength to carry gear around scotlands back roads?

Thanks ton, bit on the heavy side though isn’t it? Or do I need to look towards that kind of weight for carrying 15-20kg?
