Thinking of losing the front mech and running a 11-36 9 speed cassette with a 32t front ring. Used to run the smallest road block at the back 2 x 9 so should be do-able. I need a new cassette and rear mech so may be better to go 2 x 10 while I get the chance? What chain guide is best?

What kind of frame?

Can't go too far wrong with the superstar guides, although I struggled to set up a BB-mounted version and so eventually went with a Blackspire DSX. You should be fine with the iscg-mounted version though.

i run a P7 1x9 and i dont use a chainguide at all.

Can you get a 11-36 9 speed cassette now? I always thought it was only 12-36. This maybe what you meant, but if not, it's worth considering that you'll be losing the highest gear.

I use a BB mounted LG1+ on my 09 Remedy and it's great! Really easy to setup and the chain is going nowhere.

your right. but if you want 11-36 the 12t is loose on the hg61 and could be replaced with a 11t and lockring.

What type of riding do you do? If its just plain XC with a lot of mincing on the bumpy stuff then the guide you posted should do. If you like to give it some over the bumpy stuff and do the odd jump/drop then I would recommend a full guide. The superstar plasma is fine on a hardtail for a cheap guide, I have on on my wife's bike and that's fine but it wont fit my FS because of the swingarm. If you are willing to spend a bit more and want a really good guide both the Gamut P20 and the E:13 LG1+ are both excellent guides, I would say that the E:13 is probably a bit more adjustable but therefore trickier to set-up.

Why go 1x9 if you don't have chainloss problems. Is it weight saving? In which case, weight will probably drive what you chose. Are you also planning on changing the chainring for a single ring type?

I think it looks better and don't want to keep faffing with mech's, shifters, cables etc if unnecessary.

Depends on the riding, and how much the chain will bounce off...
Got a Superstar Plasma, and MRP G2 over here... both do the same job nicely, and cost the same (to me) anyway...
