Take a wander through one of their "camps" and ask how many of their cars are taxed or insured and I suspect you'll find out what "aggressive" means.

As i said my opinions were based on my experience and i tried to write it in a way that i wouldn't get grilled
I don't normally comment on these sort of topics as i visit STW because of my love for cycling and enjoy discussing the sport etc with others, not to mention the handy classifieds section! I commented because of recent events that affected many people where i live, myself included.
If i offended anyone with "The Irish don't stand for any bad behavior etc in their country, hence why they are moving over here!" then i do apologize as it was meant in a harmless way and not meant to stereotype irish people.
Anyway, i don't think i'll bother again...it gets way to deep!

Leave 'em alone! Last time I wandered into a Irish Traveller Site - paid for by my taxes the police refused to escort me and the little darlings used catapults to show their offence at being asked such a question - the police hid at this point.
I think the lot of you don't understand travellers. They want to be free to roam and do as they please. Nothing wrong with that. I too wish to be free from tax, insurance or the norms of society. Why not?

And the last time I went camping I didn't leave the site looking like a rubbish tip. And I didn't commit any crimes in the local area.
That's why a lot of decent folk want them to (in your words) "**** off" when they turn up nearby.

I agree with you kennyp. You sound as if you have also witnessed what happens when these kind of people descend on the area in which you live.
Everyone single one i have witnessed does as they like, if anyone challenges/opposes them they are instantly tagged as racist. The police themselves referred to them as Ferrule.
As i said earlier i could go on for hours about everything that has happened in our area.
I just get frustrated really but i'm only young and as you can imagine have better things to think about It;s one of those arguments that will never been concluded!

I saw it where I used to live over on the west coast. There are decent travellers, mainly in the north-east, but sad to say that my experience of them has generally been pretty poor.
I hate to tarnish one group of people with the same brush, but these are as close as I'll ever get to doing it.
Strange thing is though, certain parts of their lifestyle do have a huge appeal. It's just the way many of them go about it is so utterly wrong.
Anyway, I'm off to bed now. Have to get up in the morning to work to earn some money to tax and insure my car........oh if only there were some other way

Irish travellers moved into our front yard at home (three families) when my elderly Father refused to pay the £2000 demanded they threatened him with violence. Police and the local Council did nothing; they were too concerned about the travellers 'welfare'
I shot two of their dogs and turned gun on them - they left.
I find them a very understanding race.......

So if everyone watched the actual programme this thread was intended to be about, why hasn't anyone mentioned the paedo aspect?
It seems to be a cultural norm within the Roma community to sell their daughters into marriage at 12 or 13, and then party the day after she's LOST her virginity. Isn't that known as sexual grooming?
I called them dirty, they were. I called them thieving, they were. I called them Gypos, they were. I guess it's fair to generalise their community and refer to them as paedos, cos they are.
Or should we simply be more understanding of their cultural traditions? Maybe they could apply for a Wedding dress grant, but hang on a second wouldn't the wedding dress already be VAT exempt because they are under 16? Maybe Mothercare could bring out a range of wedding dresses in areas with high Roma numbers?

Some Europrat decided that discrimination against people who go about the union in caravans nicking stuff, making a mess, getting their kids educated FOC, blighting the value of homes, costing honest tax payers a packet whilst ignoring all the rules and avoiding taxes should be regarded as racist! Racism is a different issue - period.
Any race has the option to rent or buy a home and integrate whilst contributing to the public purse. Most do, so why are these people regarded as any different? How about they have some respect for the culture and laws of the countries in which they are "travelling"??
If the children of these people are being forced onto crime, perhaps they should be taken into care if the parents can't control them!

It's simple - the lifesytle travellers choose is unacceptable and anti-social. The lawlessness that this transient lifestyle supports should simply be banned. If you come from Ireland, Romania etc and want to live in Britain, do what the rest of the population do - get a permanent place to live in!!
Caravans should only be used for holidays, or temporary places to live whilst proper accomodation is being sought. Permanent caravan sites are an eyesore and planning permission is granted on the ridiculous premise that these dwellings are temporary. Half our coast line is spoilt by acres of rows of powdercoated aluminium boxes. They have been there for over 40 years in some cases. In my book this is permanent! If these half wit planners had given this matter some thought, we could have built some attractive dwellings, but no, stupidity reigns. Only in Britain!
I'm sick of the namby pamby human rights brigade who have no idea about the practicatilies of life and who endlessly discriminate against the passive law abiding majority.

I don't know or care about the "Roma" culture. I have no idea where this so called group orignated. What I do know is that we have to look forwards rather than backwards.
You live in a country, you live by it's laws and behave in a social manner.

Racism and discrimination is negative stereotyping all of a people as being the same - which is what you do.
No one is saying that some of the travelling community do not flout the law. No one is saying that this is not extremely irksome to many folk.
However there are many of the travelling community who live within the law and who are routinely discriminated against. that is where the racism comes in.
My experience of London is its full of thieves and muggers . Would it be right to say all Londoners are thieves and muggers?

It seems like the ethnicity thing is an excuse for Daily Mail style hand wringing and outrage; treat criminals as criminals, not as ethnic groups. If a TV journalist can get the kind of evidence seen, why can't the relevant authorities?
If they were seen as a criminal gang rather than a 'special' case, then the solution is a relatively simple legal one; follow the cash, nick the baddies.

Ian - no - I saw a few minutes of it and that was enough. You will note I haven't argued against any "facts" from the programme - just at the vile racist attitudes shown by some of the posters.

To say that some of the Roma / Gypsies / travellers are nasty thieving gits without morals is not racist as it is clearly true. To say they all are is clearly racist and untrue. To call them all dirty thieving paedos is clearly racist and arguably illegal.
A clear distinct difference which seems to be too hard for some on here to grasp.
