Aye, so light speed takedown wasn’t Dreadnought. Watching the twinkles after it sliced, did it take out the star cruiser sized things as well? If so, how did the baddies get down to the planet with all that kit?

Nike, it was the humour I didn’t like, it seemed streetwise, like the whole can hold please and Yoda saying page turner. Was very pop culture humour, similar to something I’d expect in gotg, but not from something set in a far away galaxy a long time ago

They got to the planet as it was disabled it didn’t blow up completely, hence why Rey wasn’t dead.

Overall I liked it , went in directions I didn’t expect which the force awakens certainly didn’t . Killing snoke is fine but I would of liked to of found out a bit more about him and his motives .
I really liked the Finn and engineer girl characters but the casino world was the one bit that didn’t really work for me , not sure why maybe didn’t feel Star Wars enough.
I assumed they would kill off Leia so interested to see how they deal with that .

Utter drivel…..!!makes you wonder why Lucas sold too Disney, was it he actually knew it had know where too go??
I found it an absolute cgi spectacle but was left thinking what the hell am I still sitting here for(7 yr old sitting next too me so would of been a scene from the movie had I decided too leave),but fell asleep instead,I expected it too be predictable but it was anything but,the story had no flow or cohesion, dodgy acting rubbish script and a complete assassination of the original characters, cheapest of the cheap one liners and what ever the message they were trying too get across become more and more blurred as the film went on,I’ve been a fan of SW since being taken too Leicester square in 1977 but last night was a massive disappointment apart from the cgi,for me the plot and story seemed like it had been written by a haribo fuelled eight yr old…
There was one epic scene that was original SW and that was where snoke, Rey and the the one with the strange voice and cloak had a dust up,class but could have been left as a cliff hanger,we hadn’t even got too know anything about Smoke, next minute he’s gone.
    Shame really.

I enjoyed it but it felt very disjointed, and wtf were those star destroyers doing just sitting there at the beginning…. Justin Theroux was criminally underused in favour of BDT.

I thought it was a good kids movie, much like Episode I. Not much in it for me.

Not saying it was as bad as the unmentionable one really, but the cheap humour was really off putting, and the audience in our cinema laughed way too hard at some of the bits. Weird. The bit where the daft little creature did Chewy’s roar really pissed me off.

The whole thing was a bit of a cheese-fest. Shame.

Can’t come close to touching Rogue One or Empire

Comparing it to The Phantom Menace? Seriously? 😆

When I saw Episode 1, I came out massively disappointed. All I kept thinking was that it had taken sixteen years to come up with this crap? Proof, not that it was needed, that any film with Euan McGregor (other than Shallow Grave and Trainspotting) would be better if they left him on the cutting room floor.

But I digress. I saw it at the Imax in Glasgow and loved it. Poignant, funny, exciting, proper plot twists – it was better than I had dared to hope. Not knowing the background and motivation of characters isn’t a problem for me. The whole Darth Vader was just a petulant wee fanny thing came close to ruining my opinion of Star Wars to Jedi but I happily ignore those prequel films now. Any Star Wars film will struggle to beat Empire but it set the bar so high, all the films that have followed are judged against it.

I particularly enjoyed the use of previous themes in the soundtrack which I thought struck the right note, no pun intended. 😀

I remember watching Empire with my Dad at the Odeon in Glasgow having queued round the block. At the end of the screening, I came away desperate to see the next film. The Last Jedi has left he and I with the same feeling over thirty years later.

Job done. Very happy boy. I can’t wait to see it again.

No, not comparing it to it as such, as I thought my second line said… It’s clearly nowhere near as bad a movie as TPM, but it didn’t have the right feel (like TPM) and nowhere near as good as TFA or Rogue One.

If they’d just left the cheap humour on the cutting floor, left out that weird Leia scene and made it a bit dirtier I’d have enjoyed it so much more.

As it was, it felt cheesy and disjointed, and I left disappointed.

I agree that, in a lot of ways, it didn’t feel like a Star Wars film. I think that, along with the plot twists made it really engaging for me. I’m not sure how that will stand up to repeated viewings but will find out soon enough.

The casino I didn’t mind as I had a feeling it was going somewhere, and judging by the ending, it’s a sign of things to come rather than important in itself.

Some of the visuals were really good, I loved the salt lake and the ships looked ace. There were a couple of moments of silence which were great as well.

While I’ve got some ideas, the biggest question for me is: what does The Force Awakens actually mean?

I really enjoyed it, flaws and all. If you see it as a step towards a ‘reinvention’ of the franchise then the stuff that some people found out of place – like the tone of the humour – makes more sense. TFA was the safe bet to get the new trilogy off the ground and TLJ is the film to ‘kill the past etc.’ so it can move on.

    Best bits –
the fight in Snoke’s chamber, loved that.
The confrontation of Luke and Kylo Ren
    opening space battle

    worst
    Maz Kanatas bit – why?
The code breaker guy and his double cross thing
Capt Phasma – only slightly redeemed

Will go and see it again in a couple of weeks.

Just seen it – it’s weak, but it doesn’t leave me as cold as TFA.

Hoping Solo will be as good as Rogue One…

I have mixed feelings about it. There were really good bits but I reckon it should have been much more aggressively edited. Not just chopping out Space Vegas but getting through a lot of the rest of it more quickly. By giving not just Rey, Poe and Finn plots, but also Ren, Leia and Luke too it all got stretched out.

The ending had many spectacles but as I’d already gone through the lightsaber duels and the cruiser hyperspace attack I was maybe getting a bit punch drunk. Plus the “cut to no sound” thing that happened for a couple of the big ship explosions felt really not Star Wars to me.

I liked the Rey/Ren interactions and their big confrontation, it did feel to me like that could go in a number of directions. The Rey/Luke stuff was generally good too but I would have been happier if it had taken about as long as the Dagobah bits took in Empire. Rose was a good addition, except for the fact that a lot of her bits were part of the Space Vegas sequence. Benico Del Toro’s part would have been more appropriate as a recurring character in a TV series than in a movie.

One of the issues of Lucasfiln being in the Disney studio is how they (Disney) kill off characters. Watch the video above, Disney villans fall to their deaths, it’s a way of killing off the baddie without having your child’s hero becoming a murderer, apply this rule to the battle and death of Capt. Phasma.

I’m not saying it’s necessarily a bad thing, it just signals the hand of a studio. Look out soon for the “princess-ing” of Ray

I really enjoyed it but by the time it finished i felt like there was a lot of unanswered questions.

    Is Luke really dead?
    Who was Snoke?
Are Reys parents really nobodies? I think she might turn out to be a palpatine?
What is going to happen with Leia in the next film?
Is Ren really the bad guy?
Could Ren and Rey swap, Rey definitely has something dark about her in this film.

To be fair they also had no problems about slicing Snoke in half and decapitating his minions.

Regarding the princessing theory, if you follow the trajectory of recent Disney female leads they are continually moving away from the helpless girl stereotype – see Moana – for example. They have enough ‘classic’ princesses in their back catalogue so they don’t need any more, things have moved on.

Remember also that the exec producer is Kathleen Kennedy…

    He isn’t dead 🙂

Second time seeing it now, and its good but could have been better with some judicious application of the cutting room floor. The humour, some of it anyway, is too contemporary. Whole of the Space Vegas bit…I’m just not sure. I think what they’re trying to say is that whether or not the light or the dark is in the ascendant, someone is making money and hence the cycle continues progressed by commerce, and that this too has to stop. BDT’s character epitomises this by selling them out, venally.

    But I dunno.

I did like the red/white symbolism, particularly near the end. I’m guessing that “red breaking through white” is to symbolise the rise of the resistance; the old-school rebellion colours were red and white. Also noticed this time that in the Ren/Luke fight, Luke’s feet left no traces- nice touch.

The milk drinking/big rubber fish fishing scene must have been to show that Luke was living a primitive existence, but could have been done in a better way IMO.

I also cringed a bit when that Scottish actress did her accent-mashup on the bridge of the First Order’s ship; like me, she’s Glaswegian (nearly) and I could hear that coming through. I suppose the idea of Space Weegies has a wee bit to go yet 🙂

Still enjoyed it; second half is better than first.

The disappointing thing about the Star Wars films like the Alien franchise is there are actually more poor films than great ones.

You cling to the hope that the next one will ignite your imagination like the original two films.

Never though ROTJ was very good either and that tips the balance.

Like a lot of 150min films.

They should’ve focused up all of the stuff with Luke and Rey in. That really dragged the film down when it should have been gathering momentum.

A classic like Goodfellas which runs at a similar duration certainly packs more pace, plot and character in its editing. But then we’re comparing apples and oranges.

    Salty

That was particularly bad exposition. Reminded me of Lethal Weapon when Mel Gibson tasted the petrol and said , “Exxon”.

I just fast-forward through most of the Endor scenes to make it enjoyable :).

For sure! Even though the storyline is mostly fantasy it’s got some of the best cinematography ever to come out of Hollywood and a superbly matched soundtrack. Not that Star Wars music isn’t tippy-top…

My main though is that Mark Hamill is a great actor,

Adam Driver has matured from emo to conflicted adult.

They’ve made Poe Dameron into a dick.

Only think that really grates with me was super girl in space Leia.

    Will watch it again

just seen it, thought it was amazing. I’d love to see it again with a remote control so I could rewind the bits I missed – so much going on.

I’m surprised no-one has mentioned the number of strong female roles in the resistance. that really stood out for me. Fisher, the replacement Admiral, Rey, Rose, fighter pilots, bomber pilots. not just token roles.

only odd part for me was Luke milking that beached Manatee thing on Achtoo.

    This.

There should be some kind of sign that come up on the screen that means you can safely leave your seat for 5 minutes and you will not miss anything plot wise. I’m middle aged, films that go past 90 minutes take some logistical planning on the beverage side.

    I was entertained.

Only bit that really grated was when Leia did that cringey force-fly-back-to-the-ship thing – in particular when the single doors were opened to let her back in and NO ONE GOT SUCKED OUT!

Maybe as Mashable says, we need to let go of the past. Its a bit of entertainment after all.

It had plenty of Star Wars in it and needs to move on a bit, Han is gone, Luke vanished and Liah hasn’t got much time left.
