Sir Boaty MacBoatface was the first who came to mind… 🙂

But there is quite a wide choice of outstanding Englishmen such as Fiennes, not to mention the guys with VCs.

    But how about the Englishwomen?

    Ok a few from me…
The thinking mans rower extraordinaire, Katharine Grainger:

    The delectable Shirley Robertson:

    The smouldering Bryony Shaw:

bikebuoy, don’t you think a person’s athleticism needs to be supplemented by some sort of deeper/greater contribution if the person him/herself is to be counted as the Greatest Living Englishman?

I mean, Bryony Shaw might be a lovely person; I have no idea one way or the other. But I would hardly think that being a windsurfer carries her to transcendent levels of national contribution.

Being English would be a bigger help.

I think you probably need to be a member of the Order of Merit to be even considered so that excludes everyone suggested apart from Hockney and Attenborough. Although Roger Bannister has been pretty special in two areas.

The Junior Doctors are arguing against him and his NHS reform? 😆

won an olympic gold at a time when we didn’t win much and didn’t really have any cash or organisation
set records that still stand and others that stood for 10/20 years
did pretty well as a clean pro against others that were usually as dirty as a monkeys bum
then he goes on to help set up a resurgent sport and push the technology advances
then sets up a successful uk company that gets loads of people out on bikes
then becomes an advocate for cycling provision and changing attitudes to cyclists to help get people out on bikes of all types, for all who want to
    pretty good commentator too

Bonnington could also make the shortlist.

Of the top of my head either Tim Berners-Lee or Jonathan Ive (I’m no apple fan but he’s had a huge impact globally).

With Mick Jagger and John Cale for contributions to music.

The question posed is who is the greatest living Englishmen, one would hope he/she is not a ordinary mortal.

Not a particular fan but as a sportsman Mo Farah must be up there. Olympic and World 5000m and 10000m champion.

    First clean athlete too!

“Which living English-person has made the greatest contribution to our humble little planet” would be my criteria. Sports people are just doing something they are talented at for our casual amusement 😉 🙂 The answer… no idea

Yes, but the problem is that most of them are ordinary.

If an ordinary mortal can be in that list then s/he is no ordinary mortal. Yes? See?

I doubt that is possible coz they are either born with greatness or they merely pretending to be great.

if Group Captain Geoffrey Leonard Cheshire, Baron Cheshire VC, OM, DSO & Two Bars, DFC was still alive then all your suggestions would seem ludicrous in comparison.

I think you are mis-remembering Malvolio:
In my stars I am above thee; but be not afraid of greatness: some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon ’em.
