I have in mind a wee trip to ride from Kalkotta to Khatmandu – any one know the area, or a good place to start for researching such a trip? Would like to stay in small villages as well as big towns, get down the locals and that innit.

That would be a great trip. I have lived north of Calcutta(Bengali family). Do it!

I have no idea, but this place seems full of people who would know and could give advice.

It is also an excellent resource for armchair adventurers (me) who live their lives vicariously.
