This seems to be coming up a lot lately!
I reckon I've spent far less on transmissions than I would if I replaced my chain every time it said it was worn!
There's some very dubious things on this thread! I think it's fair to put a lot of Shimano stuff on the list though!
I've become super nerdy over chain wear/length after killing two entire drivetrains very quickly. Well worth following a simple but effective chain cleaning routine - I wasn't doing it right before despite thinking I was being careful - doh!
Only paid £6 for my chain gauge though!
njee20 each to their own. A bling rear cassette and rings is a luxury for me and I just find that keeping the chain clean and replacing when worn means the other bits last a lot longer. XTR cassette and chainset rings on superlight 2+ years old now. 
+1 for shimano gears. Rear mechs seem to last for ever.
