    Afternoon all,

I know they are only loose estimates but why so wildly different?

Did a ride this morning, approx 2hrs at an average of 16mph (rolling hills). 1200ft of elevation and I’m 13stone.

The garmin app that it uploads to first from my watch said 1700 calories. Then once uploaded to strava it reckons 975.

    That’s a big difference…

I’m guessing the strava is closer to reality if not still an over estimate if I’m honest…

But why such a massive difference?

Same ride for me, strava says 1132 calories and garmin says 1064 active calories so only around 50 calories in it.

Is your weight the same in the garmin and strava settings?

Did you have a hrm? I think one will use pulse data and the other not even if available so if your pulse is higher/lower than average it will push the estimate in that direction. But more generally the simple answer is there are a number of formulae around and none of them are very accurate, though they should give some sort of relative indication (eg if you did a bigger ride and got 3500 on garmin I’d expect you to get something like 2000 off strava)
