Anyone know how many bikes get stolen in the UK?

Just reading some danish news and saw an article about bike theft in Denmark.
First 6 months of 2009 35.849 bikes have been reported stolen, and thats in a country with 5.5million people.
Its 8 bikes pr hour beeing nicked.

re-nicked i would suspect. a lot of bikes there are "free" souls. You "borrow" one, go to the pub, leave it outside the pub, come out and "borrow" another one

i read somewhere (it may have been on the bikemagic article about how to lock your bike) that it was estimated that around 1,200 a day get stolen which equates to 438,000 a year!

or 50 per hour
