Can I do this? Assuming I remove a couple of pins?

nope…{edit: though google suggests otherwise}. The combo I tried didn’t. Diameter of the pin was too large

Yep. Well I do and my bike hasn’t exploded because of it yet.

I tried it with my shim chain and the holes were too small – but I guess it would depend on the chain – I am sure people on here do it?

Been doing it for years no probs, as long as it’s the same speed (8-9speed powerlinks are different) it’s fine

In my experience, it works nine speed but not with eight speed.

as above do it all the time on 9 speed

and am fairly sure done it on an 8speed but used the correct link can’t remember the colour but not gold – if in need of more beer will go and count cogs and check

silver 8speed sram link is fine in 8 speed chains
gold 9speed sram link is fine in 9 speed chains.
If it doesn’t fit you’re doing something wrong.
