  • Spoke freeze & broken nipples – ouch!

    Hi all,

Looking for some advice. I had my rohloff hub rebuilt into a 29er wheel some time ago by a trusted LBS specialist in hub gears. They like to use spokefreeze. Twice now spoke nipples have sheared off inside the rim. The spoke tension seems really high to me, and I cannot turnthe nipples with my park spoke key as the freeze has locked then solid, just end up rounding them off.

    Any advice please?

Also looking for decent LBS in forest of Dean area which I’ve moved to.

    Thanks

Personally, I’d contact the LBS that built the wheel and get them to sort it out. I’ve built wheels for the past 10 years and have never used any threadlocking products. Never had a broken spoke either, but that could be down to coincidence, etc.

I don’t get the whole thread lock on spokes thing.
If the spokes work loose its for a reason, normally a damaged rim. Locking the spokes just masks the problem, until you get a big failure.
If you can’t undo the nipples you can try a little heat (hot water hot air gun) but you might be looking at a new build and spokes.

Threadlock is never a good idea on spokes. Always makes truing a **** pain in the arse and doesn’t really make any sense.

As above! Hundreds of wheels built, all with lube on the nipples not freeze. Every one invited to bring them back for free service but hardly ever (never) needed.

+1 for Bangin on, good-big soldering iron held on seized nipples for a while often frees them enough to get them off.

I have used very thin superglue as threadlock in the past as it’s easy to break and then doesn’t clog but haven’t used any locking products for several years now as I found that it made no difference. If they’re really stuck then cut and replace the spoke unfortunately.

Dave who owns the ‘bike and gear’ shop at the cannop cycle centre Pedalabikeaway, is very good on the wheel/bid front. Worth speaking to him if you in the area.

Jeepers consensus on a wheel thread, what’s up with this place.
