I’ve always been flat-footed, despite the best efforts of my parents whilst I was a child with shoe arches, insoles and the like, but this has never caused me any problems to date (25 yo).

However, this morning I wake up to a pain below where the arch should be in my right foot, and can barely put any weight on it. (I was hiking yesterday, and played cricket in the evening, yet didn’t feel any pain to recall.) I crunched on some ibuprofen, then as it seemed to be getting worse, headed for A&E, expecting an x-ray. When I was seen, they did the usual poking, prodding and twisting of my foot (none of which hurt), and came to the conclusion that i’d maybe irritated some nerve endings / soft tissue in the middle of my foot, to carry on taking ibuprofen, and if it’s not better by monday, to go back. The doctors were hazy as to whether or not it could have anything to do with my extreme flat-footedness.

Whilst I know this seems a bit of a vague post, is anyone else on here flat-footed, and have you had symptoms matching mine? If so, did they just pass, or was a trip to a chiropodist required? For reference, my usual shoes are Nike trainers, which have a good arch in them, although I was wearing walking boots most of yesterday – which are of course very supportive themselves. Any ideas, or should I just amputate it with a bread knife?

Sounds like me, only I’m much older. If I do much running etc, I feel ok until I step out of bed in the morning.

Then I hobble around a bit and it either gets better or more ignorable. It’s been like this all my life, and yes, I did all those fancy exercises etc in my youth.

    Hasn’t killed me yet.

    HI,
is the pain right in front of your heel , is it worse when you’ve restede and initailly stand up then becomes more bearable very much like epicyclo?

Inflammation of the plantar fascia (this is the tissue that stretches between heel and toes can lead to a condition called Plantar fasciitis. Not always due to a big single stress of the foot but often by ongoing stress of the foot and often with poor footwear that absorbs little of the shock….gets everyone be tey flat footed or not. Usual treatment is some shock absorbing heel cups, then maybe the doc if it doesn’t get better , cortisone (smarts a lot!), then a podiatrist.

There is loads of info on the web for foot pain if you have a browse around.

Hope you feel better soon…. 😉

Yeah, it’s that sort of area. To the right of my right foot about 1-2 cm further forwards than the front of the ball of the heal, sort of on top, around the side and underneath. It does seem to get a little better as use goes on…

Reading some things on tinterweb (now I know what it’s called), it all seems to tally up. That’s my weekend plans buggered then 🙁

    I’ve got flat feet – shit aren’t they ?

My main problem is at the front, though: collapsed metatarsal arches and trapped/inflamed nerves. 1st happened the day after after 2-3 hrs of five-a-side on a wooden floor – couldn’t weight bear for a week after that. Most days now I have to force my weight onto my left foot when I get up, get a burning pain shoot up the nerve followed by an hour or so of dullish pain but then OK for the rest of the day

Prevention is waaaay better than cure (I was advised against going for surgery). Wish I’d bought some posho insoles when I was your age.

I find properly fitted trainers fix my aches (and I do have flat feet). Or strong lager.

same here, had it since I was a kid, and my 3 kids seem to have inherited the flat feet too…

I have orthotics which help a bit, but my flat feet seem to be the sourse of many other problems, according to the specialists – dodgy back, neck pain, fecked knees, and now needing a toe fusion, as my big toe joint has over my 43yrs taken too much load and is full of arthritis.

up till recently was really only painful walking, but this past week has been sore and numb riding, which is pretty depressing -(

My advice would be to go get a biomechanical assessment and see about orthotics – might prolong things a good few yrs.

You and your unhealthy obsession with cricket! 😆

I too have flat fleet – out on the bike I wear specialized BG footware – exceptional!

Truthfully mon brav – if the quack is being vague I would recommend a sports physio. Usually more clued in than most and you may even find your feet are not to blame!

BTW I’m doing the Marin tomorrow at 10:00am if your interested?

    Cheers
