you have repetative strain injury in your hand, caused by riding your bike. Don't ride your bike, take ibuprofen, and see how it goes – ahhhhhh

I had a similar conversation with mine over an ankle injury I had since May, rest it take ibuprofen etc, this was a month before SITS solo. One look and he said, but you're not going to are you…

    Sorry doc!

Yeah I get that, although this has been going on for long enough and I am keen to get rid of it.

She said if it doesn't clear up she'd refer me to a hand specialist (oo-er missus)

Hum. I'm no doctor but it seems likely that it's an ergonomics thing- maybe just changing your riding position might help reduce the strain on your hand?

When I went back to the hospital for my final checkup on my broken hip, my consultant said "Well now, that's healed as well as it ever will, not bad at all. Just be careful, don't do any risky sports, you don't want to hit that too hard again". He almost had a coronary when I told him I'd arrived at the hospital by motorbike… I

Possibly – wouldn't know how to go about changing it though.

I had hand problems (ulnar nerve pinching causing pain and numbness in my right pinkie and the outside of the hand) which Ergon grips have pretty much eliminated. Worth a shot, I'd say. I've got an old set you can have for a nominal price if you want to give it a try.

Thanks stuart, but I might try messing around with the setup of my bike first i.e. lowering the handlebars a tad, tilting them forward a bit, maybe pushing my saddle back a bit (or the reverse, if that doesn't work, lol)

    Hand or wrist?

Try some big squishy foam grips, ergon grips or the specialized (cheaper but similar) alternative.

Get some physio – I had RSI in an arm and physio really helped.

Serious suggestion, try Mary bars. The sweep will change your hand position enough to make a difference

Hand – its mainly at the base of my middle and ring fingers, although while on holiday in Whistler I also got tendonitis in my thumb, although that seems to have mainly gone now.

I would guess that that will be the next step if it doesn't clear up.

Be prepared to go through some cash trying bars, stems, grips and whatnot. It'll be well worth it in the end tho. Just be thankful you're not doing it on a road bike out since every time you change anything you have to faff about with bloody bar tape.

I had this not long ago, tried the ergon grips but they only made a slight difference. So I raised the brake lever upwards and I have very little pain now – maybe worth a try?

Thanks puddle: It's those sorts of things I'll be trying before I start replacing anything, although some comfy new grips may be in order.

hey mike don't be too down about it .tweaking set up could help .when i was told i had osteoporosis the specialist told me to stop riding because of the jarring and take up jogging instead !!!Apparently the impact would load my bones !Unreal experts eh .

Perhaps also try rotating the bars if you're using risers – anything to alter your hand position. Even Mary bars. I raised my bars because it seemed as if that would place less weight on my hands – no idea if it actually did but I haven't had any problems since.

agree with what ^ they said – move stuff around & see if it helps
(run your forks soft for a while? – if you can)

I've just got some of those mary bars to see if they help with tennis elbow. DOn't believe the hype though, they're not a fanny-magnet
