I have an SLX double chainset on the way. Will I be able to use my current front mech with it or do I need the SLX specific one?

You’ll be able to use your existing one.

Crank the outer limit screw down all the way and it should sort it from over shifting to the bash…

Current one will be fine. As GaryLake said, just crank the outer adjustment screw down so the third push on the shifter won’t engage and you’re good to go. Just converted a triple to a double & bash myself and used the existing mech no bother.

    Hijack if that’s OK!

I’ve got 22 and 32 tooth rings on my double and a Shimano Saint bashguard on a Trutativ FireX crank set.

Would I get away with fitting a 34 or 36 for a bit more top speed?

    Thanks

Yep, but you’ll probably need a bigger bashguard too
