Evening. Was full of good intentions and decided to thoroughly degrease my singlespeed chain. Now I knew that it was different/stronger to my usual Sram but didn't realise it was Shimano. 😳

So, my question is, do Sram make an ss chain cos I like their power links?

    Thank you so much. 🙂

Yes, SRAM do make a singlespeed chain.

Yes they do but they all (AFAIK) have the same way of splitting/joining, called a split link IIRC.

PC1 IIRC. Less than a fiver in Decathlon.

Sram 8 speed chain using normal power links (the silver ones)

I'm confused! I can cope with using a power link as my other bikes all have Sram.

To make matters worse, my chain tool has broken. 🙁

Women's logic dictates that C_G's stable should all be Sram. 🙂

    What's a girl to do?

    Do shimano do them?

Split links will fit any chain as long as it's the same width ie. SRAM 8 speed split link will fit Shimano, KMC etc. 8 speed chain.

Guys, I only know how to clean chains and, even if I say so myself, I do a pretty good job. 8)

    I thought Sram/Shimano weren't interchangeable?

C'mon, surely someone on here can answer this? 🙄

    sram links fit shimano chains

Why not just use the same chains as your other bikes?

as TJ says, SRAM links work fine on Shimano chains

OK, thanks for replies. Will check the Shimano chain against the Sram ones and have a wee experiment.

I thought the SS chain was more heavy duty/stronger?

Any recommendations for a chain tool? Disappointed that my Park Tool one that has seen little use decided to disintegrate. 🙁

I doubt your chain cleaning prowess. I think this claim should be tested on my chain at the bbb. Have no idea about the other stuff tho.

Thelinks only fit for the same size chain – so 9sp with 9 sp but not ss or 7sp with 9sp

Rich – even my lbs were impressed with my cleaning! Was recommended some really good degreaser, I leave it overnight and then get scrubbing in the morning with a nail brush. But my bikes are always cleaner than yours!!

OK, so I now haven't a clue whether the ss chain is for an 8/9 speed!

Good call for Charlie, he seemed a really nice guy and gave me a sticker at the Purbecks Forum Ride. 8)

CG – SRAM chains are not all that – my son broke one in less than 1 day. KMC chains get good reviews from the touring crowd (ie. singlespeed, hub gears) and I splashed out on a KMC gold SL last year – shows no sign of wear when I would expect it to. Or you can go BMX chain which only works with thicker sprockets/chainrings but is strong although heavy.

As per Rich 8 speed SRAM with the silver powerlink

KMC Z610HX – good chains and only about a tenner.
They just join with a split link.
