I’m off on holiday to Thailand next month and looking for a small bag to use as a daysack. Rather than going for the traditional “obvious tourist with backpack” look, I thought a small shoulder / messenger bag might be a better bet.

I’m not after a full-size (big enough to fit a laptop) messenger bag – something about half the size would be ideal. Other good points would be:
– full zip closure on the main pocket (to stop bag dipping)
– not leather (don’t want it to get ruined in the heat / humidity)
– not too expensive
– available on the high street (so I can have a looksee)

Anyone have any recommendations?

Looks good – that’s the sort of thing I’m after, but reckon it might be a bit on the large side (30 x 37 x 13 cm). All it needs to carry is a bottle of water, sunblock, maybe a shirt, so the lighter the betterer.

In which case id go for a large bumbag that comes with a shoulder strap, ive got a older marmot job, its great, gives you the lumbar option on walks. bottle pockets etc, just click the bumbag strap out of the way. mountainsmith are great bit ive only seen them in the states, ive got a smaller one thats great. I’ve used both for travels abroad ( I used to do a lot of travelling so did loads of research on luggage plus found out what works and what doesnt!)

Will fail on the highstreet and cost requirements but have a look at Timbuk2 bags. I got one 15 years ago and still have no sign of any wear. Amazing kit. You can also get custom ones made on the website.
