Yuk! the reason why there isn’t an British bike industry, they where crap back in the day and there’s no reason to expect it to be any better now.

What do you mean, no British Bike Industry? What about triumph? Norton are coming back, too. CCM? Those Enfields are OK for pottering about on, anyway. you don’t have to ride like a nutter to have fun on a bike. (never ridden one, mind)

Yeah, bit of fun for the summer, and part of the fun is working on it and coaxing it along.

CCM import Chinese bikes as far as i know.
The Enfield will almost certainly be very unreliable and have all the performance of a CG125. My experience of running 1950s bikes is that they’re off the road at least as much as on it.
Still, it’s a heart verses head thing. I loved my old BSA even though it was the worst bike i ever owned…..even my MZs were better!

Brack, if you rode one all around India, you know what your getting into…. its going to put a smile on your face, its a motorbike after all. An R1 or GIXXER beater its not but thats obvious. Sort your licence and go for it, kick back and enjoy. There is a place close to Edinburgh that does them I think….

Choose your bike or car with your heart and your woman with your head. New bikes and cars are always available but a good woman is almost impossible to replaced. Buy it!

If you’ve got your heart set on a Enfield,it does’nt have to be 50 years old.You can buy a new one,even one with with Fuel injection,just do a search for your local Enfield dealer,there’s a few out there.

There’s a a motorbike place behind my LBS that sells the new Enfield’s, still wouldn’t have one though.
On the other hand I should be getting one of these next week.

Could be fun, but could also be a nightmare – every time you stop you’re going to be mobbed by coffin dodgers rambling on about the 50s…

I love bikes from the latest sports bike to streetfighters, supermotos, obscure Brits, whatever. That, however, is pretty fookin’ ugly.

Hmm, workshop wonder I think. Typical brit****. If you want a british bike then go for some thing a little later which wouldn’t be so shocking, and I don’t mean all the pricey stuff like Bonnevilles, Rocket 3, Trident, Commando. 650 Tiger is a fantastic bike which is a lot of fun as is a B44 or B50.

Mind you, you haven;t ridden any of those across india, and that counts for a lot 🙂

I wouldn’t go for the Ninja Turtle look though. See if you can find some old Belstaffs on Ebay.

In West Ealing, London W12, there is a shop that specialises in both old and new Enfields. The new ones are apparently much better.
A bloke I knew through work some years ago rode the 350cc and loved it.
Give it a go if you like such a thing.

I was tempted by one of the new Enfield Bullets a while back, just love the looks of them… not a bike for hooning around on!

Go for it – either new or old – and enjoy! I get stopped by old giffers to talk about my bike anyway… and it’s always quite nice as if I am on the bike I aint in a hurry to get anywhere (and we are talking a modern Triumph here, but they see the name and remember their old Bonnies!)

Open face helmet is deriguer on an old bike IMO, but something modern at least 😉

Go for it Brack, you (and I) know you want to. Don’t and you’ll regret it later in life.

I am looking forward to a summer plodding around the Downland villages North of Chichester, days down the beach, taking her to the Festival of speed, the Goodwood revival……

…..or hot days throwing spanners in the shed and layby arguments!!

Either way for the money it has to be a bi of fun.

Nice one Brack I have 2 old Brit bikes both BSA a 1969 650 Thunderbolt twin and a 1960 B31 350 single which is the same performance as the Enfield. If your a mellow king of guy your going to have lots of fun thumping down country lanes and I can guaruntee you will get more attention than any wannabe Valentino Rossi on his 200 bhp pen!s extension.

Its not an oil leak its a patented rust prevention drip feed 🙂

Having an old British bike is brilliant! I have a 1966 Bonnie and everything about it is great. People like to bleather to you, riding it is brilliant fun, it keeps up with modern traffic easily and if you look after it then it will be reliable.

I joined the AA just in case but it’s pretty handy as the membership is for me and not just the bike.

Enfields are excellent bikes, my old man had a few in the past. Same old story, look after it and it will look after you.

You’ll need to get a Barbour jacket for it now….

You inspired me to get the B31 running for the first time in a year. Its been in bits since I got the frame powdercoated just never got round to bolting it all back together. Spent all day in the garden spannering in the sunshine. Fresh oil, a new plug HT lead and cap and half an hour tinkering with the timing and it fired 4th kick.

Took it for a running in bimble round the lanes and I got back for my tea with a big smile on my face.
