  • Second hand + phone + organizer/calendar + camera = which cheap smartphone?

I’m crap at remembering things and am thinking of getting a phone with some kind of proper organiser/calendar application. Was going to put blackberry in the thread title but realised that would get remarks about there being other phones that do the same thing.
Second hand, handset only, no doubt off fleabay unless someone on here is selling. Want a half decent camera/video for capturing in useable detail that rad and sick jump I just did. Email application not needed but might be useful one day.
    budget: £75?
anyone have any ideas? blackberry pearl seemed in my price range, does that do what I want?
currently only on O2 simplicity and not sure whether this would support email etc?!?

One of the Nokia E Series phones. The software to sync with a PC is ok and life blog is reasonably snazzy for backing up texts, notes and photos in a timeline.

There are lots of choices…N95’s have poor battery lives, N82 has most of its functionality and a proper flash with better battery.

    Otherwise tons of choices.

The Orange C600 (i think it’s also known as an HTC Tornado), is the easiest to use & most stable windows smartphone i’ve had so far from 4 of them.
It syncs up perfectly with Outlook, and if you get a non-orange branded one, they have wi-fi too, and you can do your email on it.
See ebay# 250409847540 for an example.
Only downer with it is the camera’s not great.

I have an HTC Vox (aka Vodafone V1415/Orange S710) at the moment. The pull-out keyboard might be useful for some but I don’t get on with it. This version of windows mobile isn’t as slick either, but there are some useful apps with it.

N95’s battery life isn’t that bad. Have you upgraded to the latest firmware?

seems like the N95 is the way to go. With them being more popular there’s more and cheaper on e-bay too.
    thanks very much guys

I’ve got the first gen N95, not the 8Gb one, and frankly it’s a real disappointment. The battery is worse than an iPhone, and I bought a higher capacity one, which then causes the SIM to lose contact, meaning you lose your mobile connection. If you listen to music on it the battery will run down by half in three hours. The camera, despite being well-praised, is virtually useless, I’ve spent a fruitless half hour trying to take a photo of my bike and couldn’t get it to focus, and on one occasion tried to take some pics of the Matthew, a seventy-foot sailing ship in Bristol docks and only got one in focus out of eight, despite the autofocus showing green. The screen is also much too small to use for serious web browsing. Frankly, I was glad to replace the damn thing, even with View Ranger on it. That’s another thing, the GPS is useless unless you also buy a BlueTooth receiver. Anyone want mine, you’re welcome to it, I only use it to get two for one tickets on Orange Wednesday. (It was originally on O2).

as to how much, I honestly haven’t a clue. I’m happy to flog my copy of ViewRanger and chuck in the phone for a few extra quid. I’ve heard N95’s go for decent money on fleabay, but I’ve never looked, I just stuck an Orange PAYG sim in when I upgraded my phone. Which is an iPhone. And, honestly, the most amazing bit of whizzy gadgetry I’ve owned. Looking forward to OS3 being released in June, which will improve it further. Even the camera works 99.9% of the time.
Anyhoo, I’m open to sensible offers on the Nokia, it’s actually in excellent nick, as I put a clear hardshell case on it from new, and the original battery and back are still around. Don’t get me wrong, it is a good phone, but reviews led me to believe it was much better than it is, but it’s still miles better than the XDA Mini I had before. That just sucked. Or at least its crappy Windows Mobile OS did. Just hateful.

My mum has the N95 and hates it! battery goes fast, GUI is pretty bad and difficult to navigate.

My friend just got a Blackberry 8900 which looks amazing, only downside is no 3G (otherwise would have bought it straight away).

I’ve got a Nokia 6120 classic – its pretty small and fast compared to the N95 to navigate around menus etc. I’ve got TomTom (with external GPS), and a SNES emulator on there. 😛

I got a Nokia N95 8 gig as an upgrade but sold it cos I am happy with mine. Got a 6120 on ebay for £50.

    Camera isn’t great though.

N95-8Gb, I’ve found it brilliant over the last year, battery life is fine with the latest software (v20 ish)wifi, 5M camera, GPS, 3.5G, good video decent built in stereo speakers the list goes on.

Camera is ok in the light, with flash it’s awful. Here’s a couple I took.

BTW having a phone with calendal/to-do lists and being able to sync them with your computer has made my life so much easier. I never manage to carry a diary and I used to always forget things I had to do etc.

grumm, that second pic is pretty good. here’s one I took with my iPhone, the b+w processing was done with an app on the phone.

It’s not bad for 2Mp, the 3.5Mp on the new one will be a lot better. 😉

my n95 8gb is pretty good, but the interface on the iphones is so amazing it blows everything else away.

also you can watch porn on the iphone.

Ive got a HTC620, they dont really compare to Blackberrys and the like, but they will be cheap soon as the first ones will be coming up to the end of their 18 month contracts on BT Mobile within the next three months. They are £100 on ebay but seeing as half of BTs employees (and the public) got them on a £5 per month contract over 18 months, they should be loads of them around soon.

Battery life is to be honest average, maybe three days standby, but they do have a Qwerty keyboard, camera, calender, wifi and all the other features of Windows Mobile. The Calender (and everything else if you want) will sync with multiple PCs so good for keeping your work and home PC up to date.

I have a N95, had it since it was first out and not changed the battery, i hardly use it but its always on and around me and i think its fine, was going to change to iphone but think its all hype for stuff i never use, the N95 works with tomtom if you sort it out but any gps stuff does strain the battery otherwise it can last 3 or 4 days without charging but is deffo one to die quickly but considering what it had it isn’t too bad, I don’t find the camera on it a problem..
