My XT rear hub has recently started rumbling ominously. I stripped it down but bearings and race surfaces appeared fine and still had penty of grease. However I don't know how to get the freewheel off which would seem to be the root of the problem.There does seem some lateral play in the freewheel, so can I replace it, how do you do it or is my hub on the way to being junk?

Usually held on by an allen bolt that takes a 10mm key, you'll need a long one as they're done up very tight.
