Can anyone recommend some riding trousers for this winter to use for commuting and riding in and around the peaks?

Not sure how they will go down in the pub.

i think that depends on what accessories you choose.

I was thinking more along the lines of a feather boa:

Endura singletrack trousers are quite good, not too 'rustly' and relatively understated - wouldn't go as far as to say they're 'smart casual'but certainly OK for on bike/in pub compromise...

joking aside, I do wear bib tights (although normally I wear a jersey rather than a feather boa) because they are lovely and warm and won't snag in the chain like trousers do.
If it is raining/muddy, I'll wear waterproof shorts over the top, or if it is a pub ride, I'll wear baggies.

Anyone tried anything other than the Endura singletrack?

I own the following:
Endura Singletracks - good for the depths of winter and the thigh venting zips are useful for milder days.Endura HumVees - lighter and more stealth than the Singletracks. Cheaper too - and mine came without the crappy liner shorts that I just bin.
Ground Effect Ranchsliders are excellent - heavy duty but rather too warm when the weather is merely mild.
Fox trousers - nylon effect sweat fest.
BSpoke Holland Casual Trouser - £20 from bspoke.co.uk. Gives you that Boris Johnson look. Not great for MTBing in and holds the water rather. OK for kicking around in the park with the kids though.

And, dare I say it on here, I actually sometimes wear Ron Hill Tracksters on the commute. Cheap, comfortable, practical. There, I've said it...

I'll equal your dare psling. I wear Rohan Uplanders for commuting and sometimes off roading. I think the equivalent now is the Rohan Trailblazer.
No, I don't have a beard but I do have some Endura HumVees and I find the Rohans far superior; all they lack is a built in way of narrowing the ankle area, although my HumVees always come loose there and I end up snagging them on the big ring at some point. Just use a trouser band and Bob's your uncle.
Great in the pub and great for having the mick taken out of you. What more could you want?
