I've not yet found a workable sloution to my damaged XTR cranks, so....
If I buy the XT or the SLX, can I:
1) fit them myself without specialist tools?
2) use the XTR BB that is in place at present?
3) if the answer to (2) is a No, then do I require a XT / SLX BB to go with the crank set I buy, and if so, what's going to be the best solution for each of the two options?

You will get an SLX/XT bottom bracket with the chainset, but there's no need to use it.
Getting your XTR cranks off you need a tool: see this: BUt I guess you are fine with this?

With regaards to fitting SLX/XT - no problem - just need a preload cap tool or sommink that fits and a set of allen keys

xtr component in "no discernable performance difference" shocker!
Primary difference is that it weighs less, so if you put it on a porky bike you won't, if it's a contributory part to an otherwise light bike then it'll be better.
I dunno what people expect when they fit an XTR part frankly, it's not going to turn you into Julian Absalon!

Shifting Sl sharper but were taking weight here and the Ti chainrings are stronger IMHE - therefore is weight not an issue and your not mashing them on rocks (I prob need a bash guard) then why bother?
If its the M960 I'll buy the LH crank arm?

The XTR is away being looked at - it's presently somewhere in the maintenace dept of the 747 fleet at Heathrow, as many of the LAE's have a take on what's the best solution to the stripped and oval-ised thread! However, I may never see it again - soon to be appearing on a 747-400.1 for the co-pilot to use in emergencies!
I which case, I will in deed have a spare LH crank, which I'll let you have.
The XTR kit came on the eBay Turner Flux, & weighs about 24-25lbs. I need it for the 1st Merida / CRC in about 3 weeks time. SLX look fav' since it's 2/3rd the price of XT kit for no real weight penalty.
I went for the SLX as my rings and BB needed replacing on my XTR Chainset. At the time i needed to save some cash so got the SLX + BB for less than a set of rings would have cost me. Much weight difference? In usage no. Will i go back to XTR to match the rest of the groupset on the bike? Don't think i will

Have never had problems with the strength of my chainrings.
I've found the XTR rings a wee bit too much like cheese!
I swapped the front-middle to a Middleburn after about 18 months and it's saved me time, money and effort as it simply doesn't seem to have worn much.

As I said on your last thread regarding this, both XT and SLX will fit with your existing XTR bracket. However the new chainset should come with a new BB (assuming you are not buying a bagged OE model).
