   Some clungey little twazzock has driven into my new (to me) car whilst it was parked and driven off without leaving details.

   'Luckily' the rear light has taken most of the damage, but it's also chipped the paint off the bumper, exposing the white primer(?) underneath.

   Car is metallic black if it makes any difference, and is a 58 plate (so hopefully not too sun faded yet)

   Question is, do these little pen kits actually give decent results?

   If not, any alternatives/advice? (other than finding the selfish, stupid, inconsiderate arsewipe who did it and weeing in their bombers while owning their shoes?)

   they are as good as any other touch up stick. but as with any touch in you will still see it. only way to make it as new is to have it properly repaired eg: flat it back prime, base coat, 2k laquer and blend it in.

   i got a colour pen from the Skoda dealer for my then 8year old car, colour match was fine. Issues, metallic paint, Metallic paint i believe has small pieces of metal suspended in the paint, problem is getting them to float in the right way in the small patch you repair. Thin coats should sort it but it isn't easy to get it perfect.

   One part of the car had caught a bollard or similar and scrapped the paint in the rear wheel arch. In the end the paint looks ok. fine wet and dry and a few thin coats then laquer over top.

   It's not much to spend for the pens but tbh most people make a pig of it, they're more for people who just want the colour and aren't at all bothered about the finish. You can get a good result with time and practice, and some colours work better than others (the metallics I've used just didn't work well, they colourmatched fine but the lustre/appearance was different)

   I was really cynical about the professional scratch repair places til my dad took his focus in to one, you can still see where the damage was but you need to look, and it could pass for a dirty mark. Til then I'd have said bodge it yourself or do it right and get a full respray but if that repair was typical then it's a better option than I thought.

   I repaired some right good scratches and marks I made on my BMW with Cosmos black metallic.

   Touch-up paint on deep bits, then very fine wet & dry, then rattle can spray, more wet & dry, then t-cut, then rattle can lacquer. Very proud of the result.

   Quick follow up.

   The damage was a few deep chips, and two long scratches along about 50% of the bumper.

   The ford touch up paint worked pretty well on the chips. They aren't noticeable now. It's very difficult to get the same result on the scratches though. They stuck out like a sore thumb still, so I rubbed it away and used coloured turtlewax + the crayon chipstick thingy to fill it. That has worked pretty well, but its durability remains to be seen!

   Chips away type people charge me £25-50 for that kind of damage. Its easier if there is a swaythe line for them to work to.

   get a recomendation for a local bodyshop. we have a good one. has done lots of work on all our family cars. charges from £25 for small work.

   last week had a bumper repaired and some scratches filled and repainted. £60

    Another for chips away. A neighbour had their car keyed - two long scratches down one side. They did a great job on it.
