I currently have our team’s website domain and hosting at 1and1 which has worked perfectly for a few years. We now want to update the site and want some db functionality so need to change the package. 1and1 charge £5 per month for the ‘Home’ package which includes 1 mySQL db.

Any alternatives out there I should consider? In an ideal world, I think I’d like more than one db and the next package up is £9 per month which includes 10 dbs but that seems pretty steep to me.

I got an offer through from these guys: http://www.qiq.co.uk/qiq3uk.php

It looks pretty reasonable, but perhaps too cheap?

I use servercentre.net for my domains. About a fiver a month IIRC

$5 a month. Support is faultless.

Why do you think you need more than 1x100Mb database for your website?

grunty – basically because more than one of us is working on the site. We run an audax and the current requirement is to get a new site up and running for that which required a db. Longer term, I want to replace the main site with a proper db-based one (rather than just the static pages we have ATM) so having more than one db means that I can just do that without also having to recreate the audax section.

    m_f? Isn’t he a hairdresser? I don’t see how that’ll help my website…

    🙂

I can reccomend flump.net they have always offered a great service.

You could do both in one database using prefixed table names or whatever, means theres only 1 database to back up too.

True, hadn’t really thought of that – just seems a bit messy, particularly as many other webhosts seem to provide 5+ dbs as standard.

Ta – How much does that add up to with the code, Grum?

Plus, if you use something like Fantastico to install the packages, then it could get messy, as they are usually setup to use one db per app rather than share a db.

I’ve just set up one for the local pub using http://www.eukhost.com/
30 quid a year including domain reg, all the normal mysql / php / cpanel stuff.

clubber – you get the first year for $23 with the code – then after a year if you stick with them it goes back up to $8.95 a month I think.

Been using them for the last 2 years, just about to renew for another 2 or 3. I get the occasional bit of downtime, but not enough to put me off (couple of hours a month at most), and their support are fairly responsive at all hours.

EDIT: The feature list doesn’t mention it but you’re allowed up to 100 MySQL DBs.

I just built a site using mr.site to sell my artwork on. My old site cost me £500 to be built and the designer wanted loads of money to update it. I got a package for £49 down from £99 (hsbc offer) that includes domain names for a year. I’m reall pleased with the customer service I got and how easy it all was. You sound like you know what your going on about, so maybe don’t need this package but they have gone beyond what I would expect from customer service.

Clubber, you can have more than one table per database you know.

before you waste your money on something you don’t need I suggest that you perhaps read up on MySQL and relational databases as whole.

Don’t mean to sound pedantic by the way or anything else either. I just think that it sounds like your a bitof a noob at this and if you don’t understand the Db aspect of it then when you get hacked proper, you will lose all the content in your database. I am pretty sure that for the price they are quoting a month there will be NO database back ups!

Mediatemple here but on current exchange rate it works out about £13/month for their Grid Server package. But I’m running about 10 sites off that…

grunty – thanks but I’m very conversant with dbs, just not specifically mySQL ones. Luckily I have someone who does know that part of it.

I’m well aware that you can have more than one table but as has been mentioned above, having a single db raises the potential for problems if running more than one application on the same db.

As for backups, that’s something I’ve considered – either through a manual remote task or as part of the service.
