how is anyone doing this? have some gore alp x shorts which cost a small fortune! only used about 5 times in wet, and were still beading off most water/mud until the first wash.....now ive washed them as per instructions and the water no longer beads off as it did?????
most gutted for £90, im not eniterly sure its leaking through, but its definitely not beading off anymore 
they are the gore alp x shorts with goretex paclite material (very thin)

clean all the tray in your machine then run it on a rinse & spin etc (without detergent).
then wash your shorts with a goretex friendly detergent nikwax.
every few months after washing you can wash with nikwax reproofer.
I think you wash on a 30 degree synthetic cycle.
then throw in the drier to activate the reproofing

Pure soap, then a reproofer and tumble dry lightly.
something like nikwax tech wash and tx. direct reproofer. You can also buy wash and reproofer in 1.

Yes never use normal detergent or fabric softerner on goretex it strips the DWP coating. Soap flake or specialist cleaners only.
I believe the beading effect is down to treatments that slowly perish not a properties of goretex fabric (could be wrong though)
thats the thing should have stated - ive already used the graingers 30degree washer with the 1st and only wash....i didnt expect it to be a problem so i never thought about using the pproofer one??
i also didnt tumble dry after washing, just hung to dry outside?
Soap flakes from Boots are a lot cheaper than the Nikwax/Grangers stuff and just as good.
Don't use the soap flakes in a washing machine though, just handwash in a bath/sink/bucket.
Tumble drying really does help, IME.
a word of caution on the tumble drying though. some manufacturs (Altura React for one) say no tumble dry on their care label - air dry. worth checking
nikwax tech wash and txBought a gallon of both for my innumerable waterproof jackets trousers (mainly walking stuff) but also use it occasionally on plain windproof stuff works just as well albeit with a much shorter life. Must admit I have never come across gortex shorts. Are they comfy i.e. well padded where you need it and pockets at the rear no daft cargo pockets or front pockets? Can you tell me the brand and where you got them from? Must admit I normal just live with the wet. Unless it's hammering down and them I put on the thin pair of treated windproof trousers.
PS Tech wash says on the packet pure soap. Soap flake boxs (Mainly for wool) also say pure soap so they should be interchangeable.
NOTE it is contradictory to use a pure soap wash and then use a reproofer you may as well just use a normal soap powder. The pure soap is to save you useing the reprofer not to protect the material. So you clean with the pure soap (tech wash etc) untill the waterproofing starts to fail then you uses the reproofer. I have noticed that the nixwax dose not mention heat as in tumble dyer anymore good as I haven't got one but I do still stick them on a raidator as I canot get out of the habit?
