My thoughts from various experiences.
If you want to drive on a track, pick any easy one to start with ie not many bends. There is so much for you to think about that you end up knackered, and IMO its better to get your lines right on a few corners that cock up.
I did a track day where you went out in a Focus ST (not really a sports car) with an instructor and 2 other occupants, instructor first then you each had 3 laps. Was good for basically looking where the corners are but not much more.
I then went out in a single seater for 4 laps which was fantastic, could really get going. Then did 4 laps in a Catherham with an instructor. This was fantastic he encouraged you to go quicker, when to turn in, and when to brake etc.
In reality I wish it had been 4 laps in the Catherham with instructor, followed by 4 laps in single seater, followed by 4 laps in Caterham.
I’ve also done a rally half day thing. It was on a proper forest stage in an Impreza. You got quite a lot of laps, but there was zero run off so if you cocked up you were in the trees or rolling down big hills. At the end of the day the instructor took me out and showed me a quick lap. I wish that had been done first as it really showed you how aggresive you need to be with the brakes and turn in etc.
IMO if you do a rally thing, make sure you go some where with run off as that kind of stopped me from really going for it.
3rd option is to do a track day in your own car 🙂 will work out the cheapest per lap even after new brakes and tyres. Again though try and go to one where an instructor takes you out first, it will make the day much more fun.
