i've got a Pro II which is an out-of-the-box 9spd one with an aluminium freehub
just wondering if it's possible to run it singlespeed without making a mess. i expect a regular 1/8" steel cog would dig itself into the freehub fairly rapidly. has anyone tried it?
does anyone do singlespeed cogs which have a nice wide spline to spread the load? i.e. a bit like an XT cassette spider

superstar do some which look really wide.
Surly ones have a pretty wide base when compared to the cheapo pressed ones... but it is still only about 5mm - Andel do one as well - available from VeloSolo and Charliethebikemonger
My 9 speed cassette dug in nicely on my Pro II so I just thought **** it and ran a standard SS cog and spacers on mine. So far so good!!
Personally I'd get the steel freehub. I got one cheap off here. Next best thing would be the groove armada but even that will dig in a bit.

the superstar one (dare i say it) looks ideal as it's 10mm wide, although i might have preferred a steel one for longevity. also i vowed never to give him any more money

Can only really comment on the Surly ones, but they are fine to use on alu freehubs.
The main issue with them digging in, as this can happen with a cassette too, is getting the lockring at least 40Nm (that's bloody tight btw, if you don't have a torque wrench!!). That way, the lockring and spacers together with the single cog are cinched up super-tight and not relying on the splines on the freehub body to hold them in place.
Used Chirs King and Surly (both about 4-5mm) on ally Pro2 and Pro3 and both been absolutely fine, in fact better than most cassette's i've used.
This is for proper honking up Dark Peak inclines too.
I use a superstar wide spline one and its fine , have just ordered another one actually in a different size
I'm using a groove armada on an alu pro2 freehub body and its fine. I'm a 14 stoner too.
