You know the sort of thing, where an actor or actress is simply so perfect for the role, that no one else can really play them afterwards?
For example;
Joan Hickson is Miss Marple. No one else can do it.
David Suchet has Poirot nailed.
Richard E. Grant is the only Scarlet Pimpernel there could ever be.
So, who else fits the bill?

I think he looked the part; I don't think he acted the part. In the books Aragorn knows he is destined to be king and is 'kingly' from the start. In the film, Viggo spends the first two films acting like a broody teenager, unsure of his role and destiny.
How about Johnny Weismuller (sp?) as Tarzan and Erol Flynn as Robin Hood? I also prefer Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes

I think the question is about characters that already existed ie in books/plays etc, and were subsequently made into films. So for instance Dirty Harry/Pulp Fiction don't count as the characters were either created for or evolved along with the actors who played them. So:

Very surprised at Jeremy Brett for Holmes. I thought he played him like a camp, supercilious theatre ham. Wood from the knees up IMHO.
