not free Im afraid but I use beyondcompare to sync custom folder and file trees across drives and USB sticks very successfully.

Very reliable, and easy to use. Worth the licence fee IMO.

If you just want to copy a folder tree across, microsoft synctoy does the job, and is free.

If you want multiple old versions type backup, I'm not sure what does it that is free.

    Too late?
Syncback for files and folders (I set up about 4 different profiles for Outlook, music, photos etc)
FBackup for a backup of the whole partition

I've tried loads and have stuck with SyncToy, so easy to use and just copies your files and file names straight across to the external drive.

    Also it's free.
