Okay so I emailed my boss today as he is in the office tomorrow.

Essentially I am underpaid, such was my haste to get a job after the recession hit me in my last place. Last place paid £24k plus no travel expenses as 5 mins from home. Current place £15k plus travel expenses of around £1200.

The second least paid person is on £18k which is the minimum I would take, now I am prepared to hand in my verbal notice if offered less but knowing my boss he won't want to lose face (he's very proud of his achievements and rightly so). So my question what to go in at £80 a day £85 a day?

I'm off to eat dinner so will reply later.

hmmmm I think this could be tricky.

What's to stop your boss putting forward the case that you accepted the job at 15k?
And how do you know everyone elses wage?

What is the job? Could he simply tell you to beat it knowing that he'll find someone else at 15k?

I'm not putting you down at all, but I think that this type of thing can be difficult to negotiate once you're in.

Oh, and 15k in tax - one day I'll make that much....... one day....

What do you do? Any jobs going? Actually my last boss probably paying similar, quite easy just inherit a company and do sweet FA! Not that I'm saying BB is in this situation.

Sorry pal, but as can be seen I earn very little so I won't be ashamed of talking about it online. Although I'm aware many people won't be seeing a rise.

Yes I did jump into the job but all these media outlets made me feel the world was caving in, I wanted a job.

Just through listening and I asked the chippie what he earns.

I design small buildings (not an architect) I'm not sure there are certainly people who can do what I do but, I'd be surprised if A) there were that many in the area. B) If he could get them to take £15k. I imagine we would both loose, me having no job and the company producing second rate quotes thus loosing money to the competition.

It is ultimately where I'd like to go, but I don't have great business/networking skills and I'm fairly new to the full time working world 3 years experience from uni. So feel it is best to stay an employee for the time being. Plus start up costs are £££££.

I think the majority are joking, besides you get the joy of knocking off their Audi wing mirrors on the commute

All you can do is ask, if you're valued and the company can afford it you're in with a chance. You do need to be prepared to call their bluff though, if you honestly won't go somewhere else it'll probably come through during the negotiations.

It all comes down to how reasonable your manager is, it's amazing how many managers utterly rely on their staf but never see it.

Show him what you have brought to the job and how you have added value.
Dont back him into a corner and dont go to war and give him every opportunity to say yes rather than winding him up and giving him a reason to say no. You may be surprised and get what you ask for.
Only threaten to resign if you mean it!
