One frame I can think of is a Pastey Howler. Had a good reputation when tested albeit a while ago. Think they are still going even after the ti Howler PR disaster iirc

Was about to post that the Merlin is alu, but started thinking about what a strange thread this is. Bloke posts request for frame suggestions, doesn't say what type of riding it's for, presumably wants steel because it's more compliant, blah blah, blah, but picks some pretty burly frames as examples?

Yep, fair point but given the limited options thought it might be worth a punt

Thanks for replies, apologies for confusion re steel whatever... mishap when making the original post.
I have a nondescript alu frame that works and I like riding but I would like to replace sometime in the future because it was second hand and am prepared for it to crack (I dont know its previous history, it looks a bit beat up) and also becuase its extremely rigid and would prefer something a bit comfier that'll last. Not doing any jumps or anything but normal XC type of riding, but would like something strong and comfy, hence I asked on steel and had for examples Inbred and Blue Pig that dont break the bank.
Thanks
