A friend of mine is looking for a new mtb to ride with his kids for under £300. Nothing savage, rather obviously for that price, but something that isn’t going to fall apart on his second ride. Any suggestions please?

Whatever you can find on offer at Paul cycles on offer or otherwise put a wanted ad on the classifieds for a good used bike.
Otherwise look at Decathlon Rock riders or Carrera Vulcan deals at Halfords

    Second hand all the way.
We just bought specialized hardrock with Fox Talas, X9, SLX brakes and Mavic Crossride wheels. In Good nick, needed a new BB.
    Cost £250.
Mrs Oab’s Cannondale F900sl with depression, XT and Hope brakes was £225.
    Why buy new?
Put a wanted ad up here, be patient and fussy for a forum regular and a good bike.
