Let’s try to be a bit more positive then, eh?

Post an act and (if poss) a video to convince us why they should be rated more highly.

I’ll start with Pop Will Eat Itself. Yes they were successful at the time, but have been largely forgotten since – even though their music stands up very well today…

And also Britain’s greatest unrecognised pop genius The Jazz Butcher…

Regarded by many as a comedy band, but musically, massively underrated. And hugely influential too. I reckon Sean Ryder as a lyricist is a genius.

Really enjoyed the first album, not so sure about the second though.

    John Shuttleworth.

All he does is sing about everyday trivia to nursery-rhyme type tunes interspersed with dodgy effects from his Casio keyboard.

Some people just don’t get it.

Therapy? definately underrated, or more like overlooked, they’ve become part of the background noise of british rock, which I guess improves the quality of that background noise immensely. Unless the Shameless album comes on, in which case you’re screwed.

Carter USM… A great band, now relegated to a joke for sneering music industry pricks and occasional appearances on TV talking about attacking Philip Schofield. Oh and occasional sellout gigs at Brixton Academy.

I am Kloot, although their recent Mercury nomination will probably change that. best songwriter in Britain IMHO.

+1 binners for the happy mondays

Band called clem snide, from the US, love them, saw them live about 5 years ago, they finished their set in a tiny club in newcastle, i went over to speak to them, about 5 minutes into the conversation I mentioned they didn’t play a song I like, the singer picked up an acoustic guitar, jumped on stage and played for another 30 mins or so, starting with the song I liked, brilliant!

Lowgold, their first album was as good as any guitar music at the time (2001 / 2002 ish)

    Stone Temple pilots

I intially thought they were a Pearl Jam ripp-off after listening to a few songs from their debut album. But later albums showed that they had their own style and sound.

Check out: ‘Plush’, ‘Vasoline’, ‘Interstate Love Song’ and ‘Still Remains’

    Live.

Big in America but never really got much credit over here.

Check out: ‘I Alone’, ‘Selling the Drama’, ‘Lightning Crashes’, ‘Sweet Release’, ‘Graze’ and ‘All I need’.

    Silverchair

Labelled as teenage Nirvana Wannabees, but evolved from Grunge into a really good alternative rock band.

Check out: ‘Tomorrow’, ‘The Door’, ‘Pop Song for us rejects’, ‘Emotion Sickness’, ‘Point of View’, ‘Paint Pastle Princess’, ‘The Greatest View’, ‘Without You’, ‘Too much of not enough’ and ‘The Lever’

I also think Bowie is underrated in the British rock hierachy- when you see the fawning over folk like Elton John, Mccartney, Mercury, Ozzy etc.

There’s loads from the 80s when the charts were a closed shop and there was a clear line between indie and major label stuff. e.g. Cocteau Twins got a lot of music press aclaim but I doubt many listened to them outside of the indie crowd.

Neutral Milk Hotel from the 90s were praised to the skies, but still deserved a wider audience. Having the worst name in music history probably didn’t help with this. In the aeroplane over the sea is a stunning record – I still pick it up at times and find it knocks me out, hell of an album.

At the drive in had too hard a sound for mainstream success, but still deserved to be better known over here. One of the best rock outfits of the late 90s – Relationship of Command still hold up brilliantly. Their next project The Mars Volta also started out like a train but have lost their way latterly.

    Some interesting stuff there.

I would also like to suggest Beulah, their LP WHen Your Heart Strings Break is one of my all-time faves and just perfect summer pop music…
