Some how I have to rebuild a starter motor for a generator on the work cherry picker. I have looked at buying a new one but they don’t seem available.

Can I buy one for a ka/panda etc. And make a new mounting plate and use that? The current one is written off totally!

Any ideas? We have a fully equipped engineering workshop and don’t mind a bit of hard graft.

    Thanks Shaun

Can you not get the existing one rewound?

I am looking in to that at the moment but was thinking a £30 starter motor may do the job.

Anything is possible whether it is worth the effort and time to bodge it is another question – recondition the current one would be my choice as shaft length speed teeth etc are likely to be different on the new one

I would get one that has the same amount of teeth and same rpm. Is there a different “throw” on starter motors?

    How about a hand crank?

It’s for a petrol generator made in very few numbers (or so it seems).

I have a place local to me that will service it but they want need to £150!

We might just buy a new genny!

What make of engine is it?
What is wrong with the starter?
    Got any pics?

I’ve rebuilt/bodged a few starters, but without any of the above details, it’s a bit hard to make suggestions.

It’s a kubota genny, (don’t know model number) the old one ripped it self apart after being left in the on position.

Its probably the same stare motor as something else – the trick is to find out what. its unlikely to be bespoke to a company that produces sall amounts of gennys

That’s the trick. When I go to the specialist rebuilding shop I’ll ask if it’s the same as any others so I can just buy that instead or if it goes again we can replace it.

    Kubota = expensive!

Chances are you will be able to buy a replacement (kubota are generally pretty good at spares, even for older stuff), but I’d make sure you’re sitting down when they tell you the price.

However, given it’s kubota, chances are it’s a part made to their design, and won’t be available from other suppliers. Paying £150 to get it rebuilt is probably the quickest option (and highly likely the most cost effective by the time you buy/mod something else)

    What exactly got ripped apart?
I’m guessing the armature got burnt out/exploded due to being spun too fast, or did the drive/clutch give out first?

Well I wasent there when it happened. I have stripped it down and the copper coil at the top (next to the brushes) has been ripped apart and the brushes have melted (well thats what it looks like) some one started the engine but didn’t disengage the starter and it kept running and burn out!

The brushes have fallen out and jammed into the copper reel and ripped it up. (well Thad what it looks like to me)
