Seeing as I’m a diabetic, I was thinking it would be a wise idea to get something like a Medic Alert tag for solo rides, but, well, they all look a bit pants really. Anybody know of other options that do the same thing, or are Medic Alert the best?

    Thanks

    Wrist band from:
    http://www.RoadID.com

Its lasted well (over two years of daily commuting) and been needed once.

    Paramedics were impressed with it.

I wear one. TBH it’s just a silver chain with a slightly large St Christopher on one side and the Medicalert logo on the other.

    Medicalert do wrist chains too.

Also a good idea to carry a “I’m diabetic” card in your wallet with your meds and basic instructions of what to do if someone finds you unconscious. (You carry dextrose tablets with you?) People generally don’t know. A few of my friends said they would inject me with insulin! Yikes! Hypo-ville Arizona!

I carry a laminated credit card size statement in wallet saying Type 1, etc., but suppose I should really get around to something in my body…

A few of my friends said they would inject me with insulin!

Same here in the past! A few regular riding buddies are doctors so am okay now!

Was considering the dog tag as an option. The roadID looks good as you can get a fair bit of info on it.

I’ve usually got a card on me, but not in the camelbak at the moment as the last one was trashed by a weekend of riding in the rain!

I’ve always got dextrose tabs in the camelbak. I’m lucky that the guys I usually ride with know and are pretty clued up about it.

lol’d at your friends suggestions, still if they want you to get a lift in the van with the noisy horn and flashing lights…….

Nearly forgot, got one of my usual checkups at the hospital on Tuesday so will pick up a couple of the newer plastic ‘I’m diabetic’ cards whilst I’m there

Get some Ink. A mate used to race motorbikes and he is some rare blood group had a tat done with his blood group surrounded by a RAF type bullseye looks pretty good

For all manner of reasons I wear the RoadID one – it’s comfy, light and as originally stated, you can get a lot of info on it (I have my wife’s contact details, my name, address and a couple of lines of medical stuff.) Good company and quick delivery (and the dollar’s weakened against the pound a little now too…)

My daughter has a medic alert wrist band and it’s held up fine for the 2 years she’s had to wear it.

could you not put something in your phone under the ICE heading (in case of emergency). I’ve got ICE Me in my phone with my details so if I’m found in a heap, they know who i am.

I got a set of army style dogtags made up for less than a fiver several years ago- something like http://www.dogtags.co.uk, part of an army suplus company?

ICE only works if you have your phone with you. And even then, all the first aider can do is call your NOK. All that time I could be slipping further into a diabetic coma.

Most FA’s or medics, if not all, will look for a bracelet or chain.

Cards with “Feed me sugar, I’m a diabetic freak” only work if you’ve got ya wallet on ya. And the cynic in me says if I’m passed out down some street, I’m probably gonna get my wallet lifted anyway.

Medic Alert for me – have had it for last 20 years or so…does the job. Also got dextrose tablets, hypo stop and chocolate in my riding kit and a card in my wallet…never had to use any of them luckily.

Wife hates the medic alert round my neck, reckons a bracelet thing would look nicer…look gayer in my opinion!

I’m with you on the bracelet looking ‘gayer’.

Just ordered a RoadID as they look the least offensive to me!

How does the roadid work? MedicAlert has a list of my condition/doctor/NOK/medication/allergies/etc on record so if they phone up and quote my member number they get all my details…does the Roadtag thing have a similar service?

Ditto. Specialise Nurse, last time I had my annual diabetes MOT, gave me some information on Hypo-Fit that you can get on prescription. Comes in different flavours, and is basically energy gel on prescription…

I’m not sure what’s worse. The taste of hypostop, or the vague feeling that someone is actually forcing this stuff into your mouth.

Ah gotta love the yearly DSN visits. The retinopathy screening, the podiatrist visits yadda yadda.

Mind you, since quitting smoking in December, my control has been MUCH better, my HbA1c is about 7 and my cholesterol is bang on. I also love the fact I can say to the missus “ooh, feeling a bit low, get some choccy out for me”. Best medicine in the world ;o)

Luckily, never happened to me so far…

My last Hb was 5! Got told off for that!

I suspect my next one will be about 9 – I’ll probably get told off for that as well!

The threat of otsource at workd sent me into a spiral of munchie naughtiness. 🙁

Could you have “ICE Im diabetic” in your phone? Would show up if searching for just “ICE”

I could have that on my phone, but i’d have to tell whoever picks it up what the password is (it’s a Blackberry), so if I’m spark out, it aint gonna work!

my experience with my daughter who has a similar but less well recognised condition to diabetes (adrenal hyperplasia – needs injection for trauma/shock) is that the “snake” medicalert symbol is well recognised, certainly in Europe, and this gives me some sort of peace of mind that if she jumps off a ski lift or i drive off the road help will be at the end of a toll free phone line
