It's Mrs BB's birthday today so we are in Central Manchester visiting her family. Once all the visits are out the way i thought I would take her out for a curry or an Italian tonight. We are staying near Spinningfields but happy to walk a bit for something nice.

Not Italian or Curry but the Xmas Markets are on at the moment so could be worth a visit, especially Albert Square. In Spinning Fields then Thaikhun is pretty good.

Akbars is pretty good for a curry or you could head to san carlo's and stare at footballers and coronation st actors

San Carlo's is noisy, crazy and fun and the service is excellent in the best Italian tradition. The food is pretty good too. You might spot a couple of TV or cheese-rolling celebs as well.

Does it have to be curry or Italian? If you're staying in Spinningfields then you've got a selection of really great restaurants and bars. Start off with cocktails in The Alchemist, then if it were me, I'd got for Neighbourhood. We went there for a friends birthday recently and the food was outstanding! Great atmosphere, and the obligatory Corrie 'stars' and footballers.

Or if you really feel like treating her... then theres only one choice 😀

The best food i've had in Manchester of late was Ethiopian at Habesha it's above a kebab shop and freezing cold but the food is authentic and tasty as anything.

Beers are only £2.50* as well 😀

*£2 monday-friday

Again not curry or italian but I had tapas in El Rincon on Longworth St last month which was fantastic - if you like tapas. We were staying at the spinningfields tpi and it was only a few minutes walk away.

When we were there the hotel had only opened 2 days before so it was BOGOF at the hotel bar 5-7pm. Result.

Please excuse the hijack but I have a couple of hours to kill whilst in Manc city centre soon and had hoped to take in lunch with some work pals

We're on a limited time window and would happily pay for something "nice" but not Michelin stars 🙂

The tapas place looks good, I always prefer indies to chain restaurants

What else is around where we could eat without faffing around for hours please?
Or should I just book El Rincon?

Thanks

If you do go to Akbars, don't make the same mistake I did the first time I went. One naan bread is more than enough, two is impossible.

East z East on Blackfriars St do a nice curry. San Carlo and Stock for Italian. If you want cheap and cheerful Delicatezze di Bruno in Clayton is nice but very rough around the edges.

Bear in mind you can't book at Akbars and it gets very busy.

Indded an akbars nann is size of a small child. The chefs challenge is worth a crack if youve had a few beers. Whole nann, rice, big curry. If you finish you get a free ice cream... I couldnt finish but still got a free ice cream, think they were tauntnting me...

For lunch grill on the alley is good, its a chain but a local chain , or dimitries is a Very very good greek place deansgate way.

Thank you every one. We elected for a birthday pint or two in The Deansgate then a short walk to Akbar. Akbar was wonderful. Really. The walk back to the hotel was proper wet. Truly authentic.
