Gave up trying to find suitable 700c wheels on disc hubs and decided to do it myself.

Just waiting for Wiggle to sort out a replacement for the dented Tripster frame they sent me, and I can have a new commuter 😀

I followed the Roger Musson pdf book. Once I’d laced it I ploughed in, typical man fashion, & ignored what was written. The seismic activity generated by the result has probably set-off a Ttsunami somewhere.
So I backed off the lot & made one of the niple drivers he mentions. Its basically a screwdriver ground back to leave a 2mm point in the middle. After using that it was fine. As the nipples are screwed down the tool lifts clear, leaving them all at pretty much the same amount of insertion. Just have to be patient. Result was hardly any radial adjustment, & a couple of wobbles, but its an old rim that had a wobble, & a flat spot anyway. Dishing was a fair bit out, but was easily resolved.
I’m pleased with it. I’m keen to try one with all new parts.
I can highly recomend the Roger Musson book. To be fair, I “borrowed” it from a friend, but it was so much help I’m going to order my own copy.

Yep – the nipple driver from Musson’s book seemed to make it all quite easy. In making the driver, I did have to explain to the OH why one of our chopping boards now has scorch marks on it. The answer “because I was using an angle grinder in the kitchen” was surprisingly well received.

im not sure i understand the need for a dish stick though.
i understand how to use it, but dont see the point.

surely you put it in the stand, (or fork with a ziptie pointer tied to it) and then take it out and flip it over and put it in backwards, as a comparison to work out if the rim is central?

couldnt find an easy click way of ordering 700cc rims on MTB hubs, so went with it myself 🙂
