Are any of the older versions of some well know names (Glenmorangie etc) worth the extra ££?
Or maybe a Lowland?

Malt whisky recommendation please - smooth Speyside?

Glenmorangie is good, but it is a Highland malt. If you want a smooth, good quality and good value Speyside malt, I recommend Longmorn. There is a Longmorn-Glenlivet, which is very nice, but perhaps a bit pricey.

Smooth - Glemnorangie, Balvenie, Benromach, Cragganmore, Glenfarclas
Balvenie Doublewood is a favourite of mine, Smooth, lovely flavour, and not too expensive. If you want to go up the price range then an older Glenfarclas would be nice for a special birthday. Some of the Glenmorangie 'finishes' are a bit more special than the standard 10yo, but not really worth the extra (IMHO).
Macallan is also a good place to look, perhaps slightly stronger in flavour though. Not a lot in it mind. If you can find Macallan 12yo (Not the Elegancia 12yo) it's a stunning dram, far better than its age would suggest, but as far as I know it's export only. Last time I found it was in Amsterdam, at around £40. The elegancia 12 is OK though, just not so special.
Very difficult to recommend a good whisky for someone, as it's very much about personal taste.

Singleton is nice and creamy. And its on offer at £18 at asda.

I've just been given a bottle of Balvenie Signature (rather than the usual Doublewood) and it's rather good - bit fuller, very smooth and warm, bit less scenty than Cragganmore, but a similar heather honey thing going on.

I had a miniature of bavenie Doublewood recently and very nice it was.
But I still keep coming back to Quinta Ruban - Glenmorangie, but with some time spent in port wood casks. As smooth as an old Macallan but with a very soft chocolatey kind of finish. Was on special at tesco a while back, not sure if it still is.
Also, IMHO older versions are only wotrth the extra if they're matured in sherry casks. Bourbon casks improve the whisky, but not to the same extent.Posted 2 years ago # -
