    Who suffers/suffered?

I’m 31 and it has come back. Got it first when I was a kid, riding around with my seat too low all the time. So changed my saddle to a sensible height.

Got it again when I was about 23, when I was using Shimano SPD’s. Switched to Crank Bros pedals, with much more float and it went.

Last 2 rides I’ve been on, with my saddle at the right height, and using Crank Bros pedals (I very occasionally use flats, but not often) and the knee pain has come back… And it’s worrying me!

Having had an impact fracture of one knee and a torn cartilage in the other I know what its like. For me most rides over 3hrs are a problem. Go to the quack, explain exactly what has happened and most likely they will tell you that you should stop cycling, walking, running, movement of any kind. Then once you have left feeling slightly pi$$ed off find a good sports physio (yes it’ll cost) and they should be able to sort it out. Things you can do are excersizes to strengthen the muscles round the knee, I think there was something in a recent issue of ST. Plus the usual rest, ice etc…. hope this helps a little

I have had knee pain for a good while until recently i went and brought a set of the specialized wedge inserts and i swear to god its the best £25 i have spent my knee pain has gone and i can push the gears i used to be able to again so nice not getting home and having them twinge at me all evening.

For the sake of £25 i would say give them a go.

I have but we have a free physio at work and she was very helpful. Got it sorted in no time and back to racing in a few weeks. Get it looked at properly and sort it early.

I know this without going to the quack… They’d probably just describe me anti-depressants (presumably for the depression they would induce!), going by my past experiences of any ailments.

No money, properly skint right now, but I am at a uni where they do a sports physio degree, so I think I’ll go and offer my body up to them ASAP.

Thanks for the useful advice, will check these out and hopefully it might help.

LBS is a Specialized dealer, I’ll go and investigate. Cheers.

I got this recently due to my messed up ankle causing me to pedal wonky – once the pain calmed down I’ve been working on correcting my pedalling and it’s doing fine. I think it’s quite easy to fall into poor habits which can cause similar problems, so check your technique! I believe standing up more and using flat pedals tends to encourage the body to work better in a pedalling sense…

Your specialized LBS should be able to check your arch support is sufficient in your shoes and if they do BG Fit someone there will be able to check your cleat placement, saddle height and saddle fore/aft. Get these basics right and you should be some way to sorting the knee pain.

I get bad pain in both my knees, due possibly, to me riding for a couple of years with my cleats in slightly the wrong position. I’ve had countless appointments with knee specialists which has lead to physio, accupuncture, strapping it up, MRI scans and all sorts of other trial remedies. All to no avail. In the end, the knee specialist told me to never kneel down. Usefull. Make sure you do take action if it doesn’t get any better as you’re still far too young to be suffering this sort thing. I can only ride with flats now as this means I can constantly move my feet around to try and ease the pain a bit.

Went out for an hour on the road bike earlier, trying to keep a reasonable pace but not pushing it. Within 15-20 mins my right knee was starting to hurt, by 40 minutes in, I could barely put any pressure on it so was riding almost one legged!

    Gonna go seek help ASAP.

This morning my knee pain came back! I was riding stuff with the seat up and down and everything inbetween yesterday along with carrying it up ledges. Driving for quite a while with lots of clutch work over the west coast might have been part of it too.

Its on the outside of my knee and usually feels fine during riding. Hard pedalling usually strengthens it.. but messing around doing daft things can bring it on. It’ll now be nagging me for weeks.

I seem to get worse knee pain if i don’t get out riding, but i know the bike must be the cause of the problems somewhere along the line… That or a childhood spent kneeling on the floor playing with lego 🙄

Recently developed knee pain halfway round a 70 mile sportive in the Peaks. Physio diagnosed a tight tendon, probably as a result of swapping out my saddle and the subsequent change in riding position combined with effort I was putting in. I am going to get professionally fitted onto my bike(s) as it can make an enormous difference to how your knees react

my knees hurt if i push big gears, but only/mostly if i do so sitting down.

    (single-speeding doesn’t seem to trigger it, and that’s mostly a stand-up activity)

they get a bit grumbly if i don’t run for a while.

so, based on my highly scientific research, i suggest you stop pushing big gears if you’re not standing up, and start running.

    no, don’t thank me.

Well I’ve had more than 2 weeks now without any knee pain, in which time I’ve ridden the bike a good few times.

    3 things I have discovered…

My Hardtail has slippy seatpost-itis! Which doesn’t help. Not sure how I’m gonna remedy this one, will see what I can do, but it’s a Thomson in a Ti frame you’d think the quality of both was spot on… Perhaps?

I own 3 pairs of SPD shoes. None of them have the same sole thickness, they vary by probably more than 5mm between them!

My knees don’t like the cold… In fact they don’t like anything remotely not warm any more. Seemingly gone are the days of being a schoolboy, wearing shorts all year round and doing all sorts of activities. Have worn either my 3/4 length cycling shorts, or normal shorts with my leg warmers for each ride now, even if it’s been 20 degrees, and seemingly this helps a load! Going to invest in a pair of cheap mid weight knee warmers too now I think as it’s not practical wearing fleece lined leg warmers through the summer… But my knees are going to remain covered from now on on rides I think!
