Even more infrastructure in the South East

Mr Johnson has ordered his own detailed review of the plan. He recently said: “The capital’s airports are full, our runways are rammed and we risk losing jobs to Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Madrid or other European cities should we fail to act.
Other European cities like Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh or Glasgow perhaps?

Why not, especially if it means that there is a move from Heathrow - look at the improvement that would make to a couple of million lives.

I'm not well versed on this but surely making Heathrow/Gatwick/Stansted or even Southampton bigger would be better thank creating a whole new airport? How many airports does the likes of Paris, New York etc have? And how many does London already have? Sounds like madness to me.

Guess the problem is that the section of country from London to Manchester is pretty densely populated.. isn't it classified as a megalopolis?

I'm not convinced this'll happen - instead of imagining an airport as tarmac on the ground, imagine it as a huge inverted cone of airspace with standard approach & departure routes, holding stacks and all that gumph. Drop a massive one of them over Heathrow and another over Gatwick, then smaller ones over Stansted, Luton & City. Then take a look at the border between UK airspace & them pesky foreigners and see how much room there is to fit another chunky upside down cone over Boris Island...

Then consider that the airspace E of London is already one of the busiest parts of the UK skies and (when I was working in the industry) the ATC bods there are often on the verge of overload. Even if there's the political will to build it I think the ATC community will take some convincing to operate it safely at any increased capacity.

In the autumn statement the Osborne announced a series of transport infrastructure projects to help boost the economy (many of which were already planned). These projects amounted to spending of £2731 per head for Londoners, and £5 per head for Tynesiders.

If I was PM I'd be suggesting the money for a new airport and this HS2 sh*te is better invested in upgrading our current railway infrastructure. Electrifying more lines, upgrading track to allow faster trains to run on them etc.

It will only be a matter of time before it will be quicker to get the train from Manchester to London and then fly up to Newcastle then driving from Manchester to Newcastle.....

I wish they'd build some new motorways instead and ban trucks from lanes 3 of 4 lane motorways, give people who do less than 60mph points and publicly execute middle lane hoggers,

aren't they the one's who say we should borrow loads of money - it'll help us earn enough to pay it off...?

Anyway, London doesn't need a new airport, Britain does.

I don’t live in London.

Neither do most people. But if we want to fly anywhere, there’s a good chance we’ll start by travelling to london.

A new London airport will just make this worse.

I think the plan would be to close Heathrow if the London gateway went ahead. It would make space for a multi (3 or 4) runway airport with a much bigger capacity, therefore allowing it to be a proper Hub (ie where people fly in, go shopping for an hour, then fly out to their end destination). It's more an airport for international travellers and the City of London, than for the UK.

However I think it's a fairly silly idea as the rest of the transport links would be atrocious.

I have to agree with executing those idiots who drive down the middle lane of the motorway for no reason. Get rid of them and our transport system will be greatly improved.

the only reason this is even being considered is becasue itll take air traffic (noise, pollution etc..) away from the west of london where most oft he decision makeers live, shifting it into the most populated part ofthe Uk instead... Unfortunately the only sensible option is the expansion of a central uk airport (again where the decision makers live!) or an alternative form of transport be found.

The biggest airport in the UK with the worst road and rail infrastructure in the uk, itll bring the whole of the south east to a standstill, and all the new crossrail lines will be clogged with the equivelent of 4,000 lorries worth of cargo, the M25 will be come more of a carpark than it is already.

Theres also the small matter of a bird sanctuary next to it and a capsized war container full of unexploded bombs and explosives that has never been removed as its too unstable. Could make for some interesting landings...

I would be investing in more rail. More main lines AND more branch lines.

And whilst we're at it can someone re-instate the line that used to go to Brecon and upgrade it from Merthyr, so I can move there and still have access to train travel, please?

its just another borris vanity project, like his routemasters
it'll never get off the ground

if it did the bird sanctuary will undoubtedly be destroyed that part of the world is a migratory layover for millions of birds, which are a hazard to aviation

and heathrow will see no drop in traffic there will just be more planes in the air!

its funny all this spending on planes and trains sounds just like what the torys were slagging off in opposition as being wasteful when we need to cut the national debt?

Its all very well cutting the national debt, but when all that happens is that the financial sector continues on its merry way and everyone else is put out of work then large infrastructure projects create huge benefits across the whole country as no single contractor, designer or supplier is able to do all the work so it benefits lots and lots of other companies than just the headliners.
I'm currently involved in a fairly large infrastructure project - people working with me have come from all over the country - and they're spending their money in those parts of the country, as are their families.
And living in west London, and being part of the decision making process I'm going to make sure that my quality of life is as good possible, obviously

Considering the number of people proclaiming the wonders of life up North while shaking their heads in despair at the horrors of London I'd have thought that this disparity might help to redress the balance.

To be honest, I keep thinking, whenever I hear of these planned expansions, that Orwell's Airstrip One may after all turn out to be an apt name.
