i bought some hope mono m4 recently off of here and had to change the back hose. when i was bleeding them i noticed this on the caliper.......
the brake bled ok and it doesn't seem to hinder performance.
but ive noticed that any dust that gathers on the caliper is "wet" compared to the front caliper so its doing something!!
ive sent hope an email but heard nowt yet

That looks like someone has tampered with the bleed valve or replaced it, badly. It does look cracked to me.
yes that is a crack. it will slowly get worse and allow air to get in the system
looks cracked to me, a result of over tightening the bleed screw by the way it has gone, probably letting a little fluid out hence the "damp" spots, will probably just cost you a new caliper.
Certainly looks like a crack, no doubt from a overtightened bleed valve.
I would check to see if it leaks at all, if it does it would be useless. What caliper is it?

To contact Hope you are much better just phoning them; I haven't had a reply to emails sent but they seem to pick up the phone instantly.
On their website there is a returns form. They'll probably advise you to fill one of these in, send the brake back (suitably packaged) and they'll sort it. They're very reasonably priced for repairs and replacement parts, and you know its done right.

People don't seem to realise you don't need to go at a bleed valve with a vice-like crushing grip. Just a gentle nip does them fine.

i only bought them 2 weeks ago off the classifieds and on ly managed to change the hose in the middle of last week which is when i noticed it!!
do you think its worth contacting the chap i bought them from ??
or is it a case of buyer beware!!
Presumably you have used the bleed nipple yourself when you changed the hose, that being the case yo may have done the damage . . . impossible to say . . .

I hate to say it, your in a difficult position, you should inspect s/h stuff for damage when you recieve it. Its impossible to say when that damage happened.
If you havent touched it, its likely it was there when you recieved it but you cant prove it and if the guy you bought it from has damaged it and sold them on, its likely he wont admit to it this far down the line.
Contact him by all means but be prepared to be told he has no knowledge of it and from that point it is really down to you. Just one to put down to experience imo.

yes, on the 2nd photo it looks like there's a crack towards/from the caliper mounting screw.
Seriously, just phone Hope and explain what has happened. They are a very good company to deal with. They will probably have to replace the caliper but won't sting you, and then you'll have a new brake. they even bleed them for you (there's a box on the returns form to tick that says "just get them working for me").
argh a new caliper is £78 quid at crc!!! i only paid 50 quid more than that for the whole set up!!
would hope be able to do it cheaper than that ??
You'll probably have to wait until Monday to phone them and find out...

Hope may well sell you just the caliper 'shell' and you could then rebuild it using the parts off the old caliper?

Quite surprised the caliper cracked before the nipple snapped, mind.
PTFE tape around the bleed nipple may do the job for a little while. I ruined the threads years ago in an old Hope C2 caliper and managed fine with PTFE tape until even more over-zealous tightening meant that the bleed nipple snapped off 
. Not such an expensive fix back then though as calipers came in two halves (think it cost me around £30-40 for a new caliper half - job done).
thinking about it when i bled the brakes i did the front first and had no problems with the bleed nipple on the front caliper.
however when i got to the rear caliper bleed nipple is was really tight and when i took it completely out there was some sort of white compound on it (some sort of thread lock maybe??)so i know for a fact it was deffo done before i got my mitts on them!!
feel completely stiffed now.
the chap was nice on the day when i picked them up but now for one reason or another isnt responding to emails and i cant find his mobile number.
would it be wrong to pop round his house??
The white stuff might well have been old PTFE tape.
looks like the nipple isnt straight in there.
If cash is tight I think you'd get away with bleeding it but putting some threadlock in the threads of the nipple first, realisticaly how often do you need to bleed the brakes (almost never if you do it properly) . . . it's very unlikely to fail completely or catastrophically . . . caveat to that is that it is a safety critical part and a responsible person would replace it (;-)) . . .
You're on to nothing 'going after' the seller, it was second hand, caveat emptor . . .

even if i have only had them a week and they have been used twice??
the thing is ive near enough sold the bike but cant really let it go i that condition and i cant really afford to buy a new caliper and sell it at the the same price!!

Renton, i wouldnt leap on the seller too much, its been 11 hours since you posted here, no idea when you e-mailed the seller but if its not substantially longer, give him a chance. Plus you've also said

To me that suggests it may not have been visible at the time of selling.
Personally i think youd be very lucky for the seller to take any hit on this. I think you have a much better chance with HOPE, as others have said already they are meant to have top notch customer service (never used it myself).
If i where the seller and you appeared on my doorstep with no warning i think i would be miffed tbh.

anyway i have spoke to sting(simon)and we have come to a mutual agreement over how to sort this out.
i know simon was unaware of the problem whe he sold them to me as i rushed him into letting me picking them up.
all good now though
will keep you updated on how i get on with hope........
