Looking for an MP3 player with a big memory. Which of the two is the best overall? I know they are not the same sort of beast but the question remains.
I'll primarily be using it to play through my main hi fi system as opposed to wandering around with it. I have >500 albums to put on it and want room to add more from time to time.
Do you have wi-fi at home?

Classic - 160gig, £193
Touch - 64gig, £306
The extra you pay gets you internet browsing if you have wifi, you can watch iPlayer etc too.
But if all you will be doing is playing music then get the classic, but >500 albums would still easily fit on the 64gig Touch unless you convert the tracks lossless.
Classic goes up to 160Gb, Touch is only 32Gb (or maybe 64 new one possibly).
I've got a full Classic with 160Gb, all albums recorded Apple Lossless, can;t remember exact number of CDs but won't be far off what you've got. I had to delete a few of the less listened to ones to get them to all fit on. If you record lossy then you'll have no problem.
If it's gonna be for usage on main hifi I'd say get best quality you can record them on.
yeah, get 160gb classic with lossless music for your application (if you want an apple product).
BTW, I have a 60gig classic with my similar sized collection on converted to MP4a and they all fit on dead easy (8744 tracks, 25.3 days play time, 45.24 gig).
Try both at an Apple store to see which interface you prefer. I couldn't stand the Classic's click wheel so went for the Touch.
Wi fi... yes.
ATM as I work from home I have computers coming out of my ears. There are 3 iMacs, A MacBook Pro, 2 x pc laptops and a pc here so internet browsing isn't that important I suppose. (Not all the machines are mine but internet browsing is pretty well covered).
A lot of the music is on Mini Disc (recorded from vinyl) right now. I have just started converting them using Audacity. I'll have to explore the quality issues.
Home = Classic
Wandering = Touch
Don't underestimate the power of armchair browsing whilst watching the telly though - I sit with my wife watching (mainly telly she likes) and just watch football score updates etc on my iPhone. Beats going upstairs to the office or having a laptop out. I know it isn't necessary, but it is just damn convenient.
I personally think as a music player, the interface on the ipod classic is better...although it lacks the easier search function interface of the itouch...
Touch...I used to find the classic wheel so nice to use..but now it feels clunky after having a Touch

You won't get it all in the touch and the interface is the same. If you are drowning in PCs then don't get another 
if its music only then classic, the touch tbh is more of a palm pc

You have already suffered a loss of quality in this conversion, so be mindful that you'll suffer more on any other compression (but, then again, it may not be that noticeable).
I have a Classic (it wasn't called that when I bought it), and Mrs North has a Touch. For what we use them for, I think the Touch is better (wifi, browsing, etc.), but if I was going lossless (which I would if using through a hifi), then I'd buy the one with the largest capacity (i.e. Classic).
