Hey STW hive mind, talk to me about replacing the battery in your iPhone. Have any of you done it? Anything to be aware of? I’ve been looking at videos online and it looks simple enough to do but finding a reliable replacement seems a bit of a minefield.

One mans £3 battery is another’s £25. People pay more for a perceived quality. Actually it’s often the same battery.

Not too difficult but has a couple of ‘high risk’ operations where you have to peel parts away from the case that are glued in. Would be very easy to damage things and if you damage the touch ID sensor you are in big trouble. Took me around an hour using a guide from ifixit.

I used to be an electronics technician so am comfortable doing this kind of work.

I wouldn’t do it again, I would just pay someone.

Latest version I’ve done was a 5 and it was very easy. Watched a couple of YouTube videos before. Got the battery and tool kit from Amazon for £15.

I’m not sure if later versions are more tricky.

Yes, replaced in a 4S and a 5. It can be a bit model dependent somsearch for some videos. The biggest issue isnthe quakitybofnthe replacement battrey as you cannot buy really genuine ones. I suggest you buy the small toolkit as the screws are tiny and a bit specialised. FYI last time we needed a battery on another 5 we paid £30 at a “fix it” type place which menat we got a guaranty which we did call on after 9 months, even they can’t get genuine batteries I believe.

5s and older are pretty easy – you start by taking the back panel off and the battery is there. 6 and newer are harder as you start from the front. IIRC that is, I’ve only done screens.

Dont do anything until youve checked it is actually your battery. Download the Battery Life app or similar

Thanks for the great advice all, I thought it was definitely dodgy because it would suddenly drop drastically at random points and has even on occasion restarted itself but I put a battery checker app on it as wysiwyg just said and yes it confirmed the battery is bad only a 700mha capacity of a 1850 design capacity! From the sound of it not that difficult with the right tools and time but might only be a bit more expensive to get it done.

Doesn’t replacing an iPhone battery incur the wrath of God/Jobs?

Surely it’s bin time and you get a new one. Though if you were true disciples you’d be replacing the phone every time a new one comes out anyway so I suppose you never run into battery issues 😉

Apple did mine under warranty, took them an hour, head phone socket plays up at times now.

Mines a 6s, turns out the first batch had battery issues, mine randomly died after a full charge, once I plugged it in it showed 70% charge again was a pain.

Here’s the link if yours is included:

Mines a 6, internet chatter seems to indicate there may be an issue with these too but Apple haven’t admitted it yet.

Still have 6 months to go on the contract, still it could be worse it could be exploding issues instead. 😉

The 6 has a pull tab to release the glue at the rear of the battery. They’re usually crap and snap. If it does don’t just go prying the battery out, pierce it and it will go up. Flip the phone and get it good n hot with the hair dryer. Don’t be shy it’ll soften the glue and make it easier to remove with a blunt (credit card) object.
