Thank you Sideshowdave for showing me the best that Scunthorpe has to offer on your Charge. Never expected to be given a guided tour of the massive steel works when I got up this morning! I'll be back at Xmas time

I thought Scunthorpe and singletrack were mutually exclusive

Where did you end up? I'm from Winterton originally and my parents still live there so I get back a fair bit. There's some decent stuff on that side of town but I've never ridden closer to the works.

Mattie. I didn't take all the names in but we went close to the golf course and a place called broughton and santon?
Posted 7 months ago # -
Forest Pines golf course? I think I know where you're talking about. We used to ride a bit in Broughton woods but it sounds like I need to do a bit more exploring when I'm back at Christmas!

My parents used to live in Broughton till a few months back, the trails around there are pretty decent.

No problem, just a shout next time ur here and I show u some other spots to ride
Posted 7 months ago # -
Where else do you tend to ride Sideshowdave? All hints and tips gratefully received!

Localy, I ride all round scunny, place like dragonby mines, Burton hills, brumby woods and any where I can really for short local blasts.

Somebody or some people need to buy up the woods being sold and build a strack cos from what I saw, the flattish woods could be made really cool. Dave said afew hectares went for £1500! Eu funding and donations required Scunthorpe council!!

Cheers Dave. My regular route heads down from Winterton through the mines, through the back of Normanby Park then Flixborough and down / back up to Burton and down to the bottom before climbing back up past the caravan park and onto the hills. From Alkborough there's a decent BW to Coleby and then back up. If I'm on the cross bike it's good to head along the Humber bank to Wintringham as well.

No problem, I ride local most Sunday mornings so might bump into u one time. You will reconise me, I'm the unfit red face guy on the single speed

Will keep an eye out: I'm back a few times each year and usually try to get out at least once.

Grew up in Scunny and got into mtb when I lived there seems as though its the same routes I used to ride 20 years ago.

Not the same Rich, a lot less now than 20 years ago, more houses being built on places that used to be ok to ride on plus the slag pits are being used again so that a no go area now too

Cool, useful info. Is there still a mx-type loop down in Dragonby mines, beyond the landfill site and towards Scunny? Used to be pretty sandy from what I remember.
Sideshowdave - have you been out to South Ferriby cliffs as well? Always used to be some good downhills in there - most made by scallies from Barton on scramblers I imagine.Posted 7 months ago # -
Yer still some mx stuff up there and some jumps and stuff in the woods next to it. Yer very sandy but that means less mud in winter
I've been out south ferriby loads, it's a good little spot to ridePosted 7 months ago # -
I was expecting this to be a rant about the forum swear filter.
Posted 7 months ago # -
are you offering tours?
I'm bored of my local stuff at the mo
Posted 7 months ago # -
Don't think the towns big enough to give tours and the riding around here is really not that good

Hope the jetlag isn't too bad!
Feeling it a bit this afternoon.
On-topic - there also used to be some singletrack either side of Phoenix Parkway that was ok to include in a loop. Used to scare myself silly on some of those ferriby dhs, much easier on a fully suspended m/bike than a rigid mtb.Posted 7 months ago # -
The stuff to the left of Phoenix Parkway as you head up the hill is still there I think--it links up to the old works sections towards Flixborough.
Last time I was back I noticed a lot of new MX stuff down the escarpment on Burton Hills. As you head north from Burton you pass under a row of electricity pylons: there's a gate on the left that the bikers use on a weekend and which seems to drop down into some singletrack. Not had chance to try it out yet though.

Scunnytrackworld!! I'm from Scunthorpe (near Westcliff) but didn't start the mtb proper 'til I moved away. Had a '94 Palisades Trail for about a month and a half until it went to benefit the more disadvantaged in the area (nicked from the shed)so never got the chance to really explore. Used to bike up phoenix parkway on the way to work though, great way to start a 6-2...

Scunnytrackworld!!
Definitely, we pop up everywhere.
Just been looking at the OS map - seems most of the stuff I rode when I was getting into mtbing in the early 90s was FP - not that anyone minded at the time. Looking forward to revisting it next time I'm up.

It's the Scunthorpe diaspora effect...
