Guy at work picking up a top range Trek Boone at the weekend & is going to put mudguards on it & use it to commute to work.

It’s his cash, he has every right to do what he likes but I can’t help feel sorry for the bike, the only dirt it’ll see is the dog turds on the cycle path

Meh, fair enough. I know plenty of folk with CX bikes who never take them anywhere near anything that could be considered ‘off road’

Don’t worry, I’m fairly confident the bike won’t mind too much.

    Slash his tyres every day.

Convince him he needs a tougher bike

    Suggest a DH rig.

It’s only 105 and bb5 brakes, sounds like what many consider as commuter bike territory to me 🙂

He’s spending money on bikes so is good overall. Someday that’s going to be a great sh bargain for someone.

Why don’t you suggest he puts some hybrid tyres onto it.

It’s cool that he’s buying a bike to ride to work on shirley?? Personally, I am not liking that (don’t really like Treks anyway).

Used to see someone commuting on a DH rig. Thought maybe he just does some DH after work. The tyres were Maxxis stuff (minion I think), but were utterly bald. Or maybe he just liked DHing on slicks.

I bought a cross bike and rode it on the dirt

    It was shit IME

Great for racing round a field, I bet, but uncomfy and slow for proper trails – and this is the new forest, not Chamonix

Sounds like a good commuter 🙂 Maybe could warrant some slightly more relaxed geo for a non-racer, but I don’t see the problem. 😛
