OK so i've got a Mozart. Pretty good and i'm enjoying it at the moment, even got some references done on the word package (bored and stuck in the snow). But do i have to use Zune to transfer music and vids? Is there a way around it using media player or some simple drag 'n' drop.

You have to use Zune, I'm afraid. However, it's much better than iTunes and has other benefits - the main one being wireless sync.
Set it up once, and the next time your phone is recharging at home it'll copy your photos over to your PC, podcasts go the other way, along with any changes to the music library over your wireless network.
