Yello. I could do with some help with this. We've got a Pansonic all in one home cinema setup that I bought second hand a few years ago, and now the DVD (built into the amp) is whining ominously.

I popped into local shop for advice and he started talking about 1600 being the minimum spend for anything worthwhile. I left thinking "F*ck me you could get a bike for that"

So anyway. I'm happy with the 5.1 speakers we've got, so does anyone have a recommendation for a Blu-ray player and amp combo? oo I dunno, under 500 notes. Also - I want it to work off the same remote...

What is it with people mounting their TVs at a height where you have to look up from the sofa to see them? Isn't eye-level when seated optimum?

For our speakers to be arranged symmetrically in the room means the plasma panel has to go above the fireplace. Looking up slightly has never really bothered me- bit like being in the cinema.

Anyone recomend me a good 5.1 amp/reciever

needs to have (at a minimum)

2x line inputs
1x scart
2x HDMI
2x optical audio
and whatever it is that an x-box plugs in with these days (seems to have changed formats more times than I've changed my pants)

Outputs, 5.1 audio and HDMI to the TV.

Would be nice if it could give a line out signal to my HI-FI amp as well for the front two speekers.

Pedalhead that is an awesome set up. LOL. What staggered me when I was buying my stuff was the amount of money you could spend, mine cost pocket change compared to some of the stuff I seen.

£6k for platinum speakers cable, £13k for 1 pair of floorstand speakers, £35k 555 Amps.

I was blown away.

OK, let me be a bit more specific with my question: What amplifier for a Sony BDPS360 bluray player? I want something that will use the same remote. Will any Sony amp do this?

Dave360....you'll probably find lots of ideas on the AV Forums.

Johnboy, you're not wrong. The are a lot of companies making a lot of profit out there in AV land...google "lexicon oppo blu-ray" for more details :-). I actually did my room on a budget (took me 8 months...lots of DIY), but yeah the sky is the limit on how much you can spend on this stuff. It's the same when you get into acoustics & room treatment. I went the DIY way in the end as a lot of the commercial products seemed useless and expensive as far as I could tell. I also built my own subs, which is kinda geeky but you get waaay more for your money by doing it.

I was going to post a picture of my set up. Then I looked at the pictures of Pedalhead's and decided against it.

Really nice installation.

I thought the same, but then I thought...why not. I've worked hard to get my set up exactly as I want it, so why shouldn't I show it off...even if it's not in the same league as pedalheads...

Sorry Dave wish I could help, but I'm rather out of date on hardware these days. Spent all my money on it last year & am avoiding looking again in case I get the upgrade bug! I know you just want a "buy this" recommendation, but half an hour in the relevant AV Forums sub-forum will probably reveal an obvious preferred choice.

Generally though, if I get a separates amp and bluray player from the same manufacturer, will I be able to control both from one remote?

Fairly likely I'd say, although worth confirming beforehand of course. Personally, if there was a significantly better unit from a different manufacturer at a similar price, I'd go for that & try & stretch to a universal remote control (Logitech Harmony range for example). I apprecitate that's muddying the waters somewhat though 🙂

Holy jesus pedalhead... you have literally re-sparked my interest in the capitalist system. That's freaking awesome!

I just watched the AV forum video too. Well done!

One question... sofa or easychairs? Don't you have times where there are more than three people watching the film?

heh thanks guys. Took a lot of sweat & blood to turn a derelict barn into that room, but was worth it.

Well I watch films on the recliner chairs, but yes the lack of a 2nd row can be troublesome. Thing is, I actually bought four pukka cinema seats (as per your local cinema) which were going to form the 2nd row, and kept them in the bottom of the barn whilst I did the build. Unfortunately they were decimated by mice, and I haven't gotten around to doing anything about it. I can shuffle chairs around a bit and get four in the front row, so that covers most occasions...and actually (sadly)...I generally watch films on my tod anyway as one of us always needs to be in the house with the kids (the barn is separate from the main house).

@Dave360 - if you buy an amp could you not also stretch the budget a little to get a harmony 1 controller or similar? Then you can teach the controller everything it needs to know 🙂 Personally I bought an Onkyo 577 and just deal with seperate remotes - it's a decent amp for films - the centre channel is a little weak but this could just be that I have the smaller front speaker from the range I use for everything else.

Given the range of controls available on an amp remote these days it's worth looking at the remote to see if it has a 'DVD' section on it - popping into a richer sounds might actually help here 🙂

lucky enough to have built a dedicated cinema room 4 years ago..

106" electric screen
Infocus 7205 HD PJ (looking to upgrade)
HTPC provides all DVD/blu-ray playback
Pioneer 2014i amp (7.1 THX)
Monitor Audio RS8 floorstanders
MA RSW12 sub
MA - 4 x RSFX wall speakers (surround)
Sky HD

Just recuperating from a hernia op - and while I can't get out on the bike... and getting my moneysworth out of the cinema!

Tobe. I've tried "universal" remotes before and found that even if they do work, I've then got to remember what function has been asigned to what button, which is a pain. so no thanks.

However, you will all be mightily relieved to hear that eventually I got through to someone who told me about Sony Bravia Sync. Seems to do what I want.

What, the button that says "Watch DVD", "Listen to CD" or "Watch TV", and then turns on all the components as required to the settings you require for that particular activity? One button press, job's a good 'un.

You've plainly been playing with the wrong remotes. I've gone from juggling five remotes to a single one and life's just peachy, ta.

There have been a number of people actually giving you good input on your question, but you seem to be fairly convinced of the way you want to do things anyway, so good luck with that.

Yeah I have to agree there, the Harmony One is superb. I used to hate universal remotes, but this one is superb, and really is easier to use than lots of individual ones.

chalkstorm - nice setup

"a number of people actually giving you good input on your question"

Eh? "buy a universal remote" is the sum total of it as far as I can see...

the other problem with the universal remote that I bought previously was that it needed codes from all of the devices that I had, and I wasn't able to find these, expecially for the TV which is an unbranded LCD / plasma (I'm not sure which, how do you tell?)
