The cones in my xt rear hub need replacing (it's an FH M756). I was hoping to buy an deore or lx hub and just whip out the cones to use in my xt hubs. However, I've been looking at the specs, and the left hand cone in the xt is M10 x 15.8mm. The same part in the lx / deore is M10 x 16.0. All other parts are identical. Does anyone know if I can just put in the 16.0mm part from the LX/deore hubs, or do I need to get a precise replacement?

I suspect that like all things Shimano, it *might* work if you bodge it together but how well and for how long is likely to be the issue.
If it were me I'd be buying an XT hub to transfer the bits from.
Are the cones within the hub ok?
Shimano tech docs normally show cross compatability. 0.2mm doesn't sound like much but... On-One have cheap XT rear hubs you could take the cones of perhaps.
0.2mm isn't going to make any difference (bar perhaps a re-alingment of a disc caliper), it's more important that the sealing will be copatible and remain in place - LX and XT certainly used to be OK but I'd check.

I'm pretty sure I can keep all the seals and just swap in new cones, as the races in the hubs look okay.
I saw the hubs on the on-one site, but it doesn't say which models they are. Shimano seem to have an irritating habit of changing all their dimensions every couple of years.
I just performed exactly this operation.
I laid out the parts in the order that I took them off, regreased the bearings, put them all back into place with a new free hub and found that one side didn't have a lock nut and the other side didn't have any seals!
Fiddled around for a bit, made it worse, took it to the LBS to be de-idioted.
Works fine now - so i guess it is possible depending on the degree of cackhandedness you employ.
lodger, did you replace with innards from the same model of hub?
no - it was M765 xt hub in the wheel replaced with a newer model LX free-hub. I used the cone and seals from the LX hub on one side, and the original stuff on the other. Not sure what the LBS did exactly but they didn't charge for new bits so presumably just put the whole thing back together properly.
Yeah the 765 has the 16mm cones. Bizarre. Anyway, I called petra cycles, who supply aftermarket cones etc. They say that the 15.8mm part has been discontinued, so I've gone for an lx hub, which has the 16mm cone. Presume it must be fine if they've discontinued the 15.8, but we'll see...
the hubs bodies are(were) all the same size, so I used to have an XT hub, but with a deore freehub and cones. As long as the freehub and cones matched it was always ~135mm.
